James Maguire
« on: Monday 26 March 07 07:16 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on my gr uncle=James Maguire b. 1894?? brother of my grandfather Peter Maguire b 1896 in South Shields-parents were James and Margaret Doherty Maguire. other siblings-Mary Ellen m Hugh Egan and Ann-m ?? Miller, then Norman Crotzer.  Peter, his mother Margaret, sister Ann imm to the USA in 1922, his sister Mary Ellen Egan, husb Hugh, dtrs Annie and Margaret imm with my grandmother Edith Dick-in 1923,  Edith and Peter were married in NY as soon as she got here.  James m a Lily Simpson about 1915, had 3 children, John, and 2 girls-perhaps Lola and ??-all born before 1920-one had a birthdate of May 4(same as mine)  He lived in Sunderland and was a police officer there.  My grandparents, and my mother Margaret returned in 1936, my grandfather went to the police station in Sunderland and tried to find his brother-all they could or would tell him was that he was no longer there.  They returned to the United States and he was never able to find James-despite other family members-cousins still in England seeking him.  It was thought that he went to London??  Any ideas-my Mother-still wonders what ever happened to the uncle she never met, and we would like to make contact if there is any family.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

1901 census shows James with his family and age is given as 11
There is a birth reg FreeBMD which may be a possibilty??
James Maguire
Sept qtr 1889
S Shields
10a 791

and marriage reg
Mar qtr 1915
Newcastle on Tyne
James Maguire
Lily Simpson
10b 271

it may be worth buying a certificate to get his d.o.b. -then you can search the complete index free at Ancestry for his death-which would give you the place where he ended his days
May be worth trawling the index for children too

This is probably him-I am told that there were 2 James Maguire's the first died as an infant and then another sibling was named James.  Kind of weird to be named the same as a deceased brother don't you think.  I am trying to get this information for my mother-she turns 80 this year-a very good 80, but she was never able to forget about her father talking about his brother-another cousin of hers who is even older never even heard of James-everyone else moved and left him behind..
Thanks, I will send for the certificate to see what it says

Would you like the 1901 census with James and Peter with their parents?

Suz,
That would be wonderful, thank you so much.  James was older than we thought-Mom said he and her father were close in age.  I think that there was also another sister-Charlotte-she was much older as her daughter was born only a few years after my grandfather-which confuses things.
Thanks again,
Peg

Minor correction: I think the birth reference should be 1889 not 1899.

I think we are making progress...

Death: Vera May Maguire  Feb 2002   Sunderland  Ref: B65E 153
Date of birth:  4 May 1915

The informant on the death certificate is probably still alive and may be a relative.
