John Hamerton-parish lookup if possible
« on: Monday 26 March 07 03:17 BST (UK) »
Hi All:

I am looking for any information on tracing the possible family of a John HAMERTON, my GGG Grandfather.

Sadly the only info on John that I have found is his wedding entry on IGI, which states he married a Charlotte Emily Ovenden at St Andrews Holborn, on the 21st of February 1829.

While Charlotte and her children can be found on census, John never appears with his family, and while in 1851, Charlotte is shown as married, by 1861, she is shown as a widow.

I would like to find anyone who may have either looked into the St Andrews parish records, or has in their research, come accross Johns birth entry, which I only know was previous to 1809, as he was of full age when married.

Sorry for the lack of solid leads to go on. :-[

Thanks in advance

Since by tradition marriages took place in the bride's parish have you investigated the marriage to see whether it gives any further clues to John's place of residence at the time of his marriage and who the witnesses were? The marriage was by Vicar General licence

17 Feb 1829  HAMERTON  OVENDEN

Marriage licences by this time were far less informative but with such scant information known about John Hamerton the licence itself may add some further information.

If you ever track your John HAMERTON down and find that he came from Hampshire, let me know.  Have you tried searching HAMMERTON?

I've been trying to find John HAMERTON in the census without much success.

In the 1841 transcription on findmypast there is a John HAMERTON aged 31 living in the registration district of Strand.  I can't see him on ancestry. ???  It's a name that can easily be mistranscribed.

There is a John Hammerton aged 40 of independent means in South Stoneham on the 1841 census (probably with wife and son). He was probably a dissenter. Still there in 1851, a farmer born South Stoneham.

Andy's HAMERTON family seem fairly wealthy (unlike mine!) - there is a John HAMERTON at the Bar, living at 3 Essex Court at Middle Temple, not born in county.  HO107/729/8 folio 4 page 2

If it was either of these men then they would have been likely to have been under age when they married. If that was the case the marriage licence would give details on who gave permission for them to marry. I think however, especially with a more wealthy family, that it would be unlikely that the John Hamerton of interest was underage when he married in 1829.

Charlotte Emily HAMERTON and Isabel Angelina HAMERTON are mentioned in a court case in the London Gazette in 1859 against Joseph John HAMERTON and William Joseph OVENDEN creditors of Matthew PAYNE.
