hi all trying to piece missing bits of my tree together i am looking for
mary davies in the 1881 census but not had much luck finding her i wonder if anyone will be able to help many thanks emma

mary davies born wigan lancashire in 1853

i have her in the 1871
RG10; Piece: 4198; Folio: 134; Page: 30

Have you considered that she may have married?  Unfortunately there are several Mary Davies marriages in Wigan between 1871-1881, you'd need to check them for possible spouses and then check those surnames against the 1881 census   :-\

ok cheers barbara i shall do that thanks anyway,can you just tell me if the legal age to get married back then was 18 or not only my gran says that you had to be 21 back then can you just tell me which is correct please thank you emma

Not sure, I know it's 16 in Scotland, 18 here in England or 16 with written consent.  Will try to find out for you, can't have you arguing with gran!

Think you're both right, it was 21, but you could still marry under 21 if you had parental consent
