19th century Army Records
« on: Thursday 22 March 07 19:12 GMT (UK) »
I have recently received my Great Great Grandfather's discharge papers so I now know which regiments he was in, when he enlisted and when he was discharged etc. He left the Army due to ill health and 30 years later was described on his death certificate as an Army Pensioner. Are there any other records that would give me any more information about him and/or his family?

Hi Wendi

Thanks for the information I will follow it up. No he wasn't in the Guards he was in the Dublin Militia from about 1856 and attested 1859 joining the 2nd Batallion Fusiliers in Dublin, he then moved onto the 104th Fusiliers and finally 109th Regiment of Foot. He was discharged 1872 in England due to ill health.

My grandfather WILLIAM GEORGE CRUMPLIN was in the British army from 1885 to 1895 (roughly) and served part of his time in India.  All papers disappeared when my g.mother died so I have no other information, apart from the fact that he was born in 1867.  Any suggestions where I might start looking, please?

Hi Edna

All surviving pre-WW1 records are now on Findmypast. Or, if he had any children while in the army you should look at the Regimental BMDs (also on FindMyPast).

If you have Ancestry you can also look at the pre-WW1 medal rolls - but most of these will not have his full name.

Not all surviving pre-WW! records are on line. The records I was looking for dated from 1846 through to 1870 and I also managed eventually to get some for my maternal grandfather in WW! and they're definitely not on findmypast or ancestry.

I ended up paying someone to do a search for me and it was amazing what they found. It would have cost me a lot more money and time to do a search myself and they knew exactly which records to look for and where to locate them.

Hi Margaret

If you post some details  - ie the kind of records you found - I may be able to comment.

I have the discharge papers for my 2 x great grandfather  4 pages of which are  now on Findmypast but there's also his attestation paper that's not on it and a two page medical record which I think is linked to his discharge papers but not  actually part of it.

Also the records for my Scottish grandfather aren't online. Someone found two badly damaged pages of his service record for me many years ago but they gave me enough info to work out how and when he met my grandmother.
