The 1901 Census of Ireland is not yet available online. It will be available, for free, sometime later this year, apparantly, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Brendan

Brendan, have you any idea why the Dowdallshill graveyard has not been indexed on any site yet? (I can`t find it )

Dowdallshill cemetery is MASSIVE and would be a daunting project for any individual to start. However, there is a web site that seems to have done the inscriptions for part, if not all, of the cemetery (http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/gravestones/), click on Louth on the map, but it is a pay site, and I know nothing about it, and the charges seem a bit on the "rough" side. However it may be an option for you. I'd be happier if the inscriptions were available for nothing! And the web site doesn't say how much of the cemetery is covered.

I`ll give the site a try, if however, as you say the prices are tooo rough, think I`ll have to pay a visit to Dundalk, was there about 8 years ago, could kick myself for not looking, all my relatives are buried there.

I have been on your site, very useful and informative, thank you Brendan. Think I`ve managed to find a couple of my family on the 1908 list.

Hiya Brendan,

No luck I`m afraid

I`ve tried all my relatives names to no avail, what I don`t understand is, my G Grandfather was the first internment at Dowdallshill in 1895, it was even mentiioned in the Democrat at that time. Having tried in all 4 sections, there is no sign of him. The site didn`t have any notice of a payment charge.

That's peculiar. Is it possible that there is no headstone? My family must be buried very close to yours (just inside the main entrance gate), but all we have as a headstone is something with "Hall" (the family name) on it and nothing more, which is not much of a help, genealogically speaking.

I`m 99.9% sure there is a headstone, how I wish I`d have paid more attention when I was there. Yes, the grave is just inside the main gates.

What I`m finding more peculiar is that my grandparents, aunts, uncles etc are buried there, and I know for certain they have headstones, maybe it`s just that they haven`t been recorded yet.

Brendan, I beg your pardon, I see what you mean about paying for the inscriptions.

Hi Aunty Em,

There is a headstone for Michael O'Callaghan and there is a photograph of it and a transcription of it in Dowdallshill Cemetary, Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland on billiongraves.com.  And you are right, it was the first headstone.

Someone (thank you whoever you are) recently took and uploaded photographs of 347 headstones in the first quadrant of Dowdallshill graveyard and some are transcribed already, including your one.  I hope someone takes and uploads photos of the rest of it soon (so I can find my bunch of relatives in it), not an easy task as it is a very large graveyard.
