Finding records in Canada
« on: Thursday 22 March 07 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Many thanks to JJ, KarenM and all that contributed to assist me.

Whilst I am not looking to progress the Canadian side back through time until I get stuck on a few other leads I have the general question...

How easy is it to trace ancestors back in time for Canada?

I ask as England is pretty good with census information in 1841 and free census information such as 1881.

Scotland has proven even more helpful than England for me.

How far back did Canada keep records (Scotland - not too bad getting to late 18th centuary and England tough pre-1830s).

Hi Roj,

With Canada, each Province has their own set of rules basically.

Civil Registration in Ontario started

Births -1869
Deaths - 1869
Marriages - 1857

There are parish records available for years prior to civil registration.

You can also search the Marriage Bonds for Upper Canada (Ontario) 1803 -1865 and Lower Canada (Quebec) 1779 - 1858 at Archives Canada

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/012/index-e.html

Quebec did not start civil registration until 1994 (yes that's 1994)  ;D

Here is a link to what census are available
