Margarson Family help please
« on: Thursday 22 March 07 01:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Chasing up any info. on Benjamin Margarson's family, he arrived in Australia C1853.
Parents were Edward Margarson & Susannah Bulpit they were  married on the 15/4/1807 at St. George the Martyr Southwark Surrey England.

Benjamin was Christened  1830 in Clapham Surrey  England , his occupation was a listed as a baker. He had at least one  sister Emily Marie born on the 28/5/1823 at Clapham Surrey.
The name is uncommon here in Australia & can be spelt a number of ways.

Any assistance will be appreciated

Regards

Brian Ken

Hi Brian

Perhaps we need to have clarification of what you do have and what you need:

I have found various sources for this family - do you have all this?

1) Father was Edward Robert (Roland?)  MARGARSON - deceased before 1841
2) Mother Susannah died 1850 Wandsworth Surrey. She was born abt 1786
3) Susannah 55 and Emily 18 are on the 1841 Census in Clapham
4) Edward & Susannah also had a son James b abt 1808 who also went to Australia 1834 as a convict.  Also a Baker.
5) Benjamin is on the 1851 Census?? as a Baker  (but can't see him 1841?)
6) Emily married Samuel John CLOSE in 1845, had a number of children, died 1899 Hampshire.

Now I'm confused - in the link above, it is quoted from  a source X, that James arrived 1834 as a convict.  On the First Families database: that same source X supplies information that Benjamin (b 1830) also went to Australia in 1834?   Can't be right?

Ambly

I can't believe that you have found out so much information about Benjam Margarson For me in such a short time!

Yes Benjamin arrived in Australia about 1853 he spent 5 yrs. in Victoria & another 15 yrs in NSW. he died 28/11/1873 at Penrith NSW. He married Betsy Ann Haynes in 1859 at Penrith & they had 9 children.

As I said previously the name Margarson is very unusal here in Australia, but there were a few Margarsons' listed.

Thanks to you its all coming together ie. A James Margarson died in 1887 at Liverpool NSW. in 1887 aged 78 yrs. born C1809 he was also a baker!!
James Margarson was made bankrupt on 29/10/1847 & again on the 9/7/1861 at Penrith.

A James Margarson arrived in 1841 at Port Phillip Bay Victoria aboard the William Metcalf.

This has to be Benjamin's brother (Ididn't know that he had a brother) what threw me was the time from Edward & Susannah's marriage in 1807 till Benjamin's birth in 1830/1831.

Many thanks Ambly

Hi Brian
I have just found a reference to James Margarson, a baker, living in High Street Penrith NSW. He was actually the next door neighbour of my g.g.grandfather who  had the wheelwright business. This information is from a book called "Granny Cochrane's Memoirs of High Street  Penrith."She also makes reference to the fact that this James Margarson was the brother to her first husband! She doesn't give his name.If you were to search the Penrith City Library website there are numerous photos etc. and you may even find newspaper refs.here of your ancestor.Good luck.Happy to do look ups for you, too.

Hi Thank you very much for your info. Granny Cochrane was Betsy Ann Haynes who married Benjamin Margarson at Penrith in 1859 & they had quite a number of children. Benjamin died in 1873 at Penrith & is buried in St. Stephen's church yard Penrith(yet to go there ). Betsy Ann married John Cochrane an Irishman after Benjamin's death.

I will defiantly try & get more info. from the Penrith Library.

HI Marg.

No I think that James margason came out here in about 1841, as he was declared bankrupt in 1847 in NSW.

Yes that would be much appreciated if you could do that but how can I send my address to you?
