Ashton in Willow
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 13:31 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 census one of my ancestors, Henry Lowe,  is shown as born in Ashton in Willow. Ancestry has transcribed this as "Ashton in Wellous" does either of these ring a bell with anyone? I note there is a Willow Grove in Ashton in Makerfield and wonder of there is any connection?

Any help apprecated.

Jean

Hi Jean

The only place I can think of is Newton le Willows, which is a couple of miles from Ashton in Makerfield.

If you look at http://www.gmcro.co.uk/guides/gazette/gazza.htm you will see the entry for Ashton in Makerfield, which adds that it is also known as Ashton le Willows. Your  Henry Lowe was an older man, according to the census entry and perhaps that was what it was known in "his day"! Remember that the entry is only what the man himself said, not what was necessarily correct - and the enumerator didn't have time to work it out!

The Lancs Online Parish Clerk Project has quite a few baptisms and marriages for Ashton in Makerfield, there are several Lowe's on there.  Although they seem to start about 1810 you may find them useful.

Many thanks for theinformation. It is a bit of a mystery. Henry Lowe was supposedly born c1791. I have been to Lancs Records Office today and checked the parish records for that time in Ashton in Makerfield for 5 years around that date but I can't find him. Neither can I fond a marriage for him there.
They appear to have moved to Downholland/Lydiate/Halsall area by 1815 when their son James was born but I have also checked the parish records for Halsall and I can't find any of the children born there. I found some of the children of James and his wife Alice in the Lydiate parish records but that church was not founded until 1839.

I don't really know where to look next!

Thanks for your help anyway

Jean
