Fortune Family of Wexford
« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 07:10 GMT (UK) »
My 3rd g-grandfather was Nicholas Fortune.  He married a Jane Young in Pembrokeshire, Wales 12.6.1856.  Nicholas was born 1836 Wexford, Ireland.  On his marriage certificate to Jane, it says his father was Edward Fortune (occupation; farmer) and that Nicholas was a Malitia Man at Pembroke Dock Barracks.

There is no sign of Nicholas on the 1851 Wales Census so I would say he was posted to Pembroke Dock c1854-55.

Does anyone have any idea how I can find out any further information on Nicholas and Edward and their families?

Thanks.

Hello Grumbles,

I looked at the Griffith's Valuation extracts, on John Hayes website, which took place in Co. Wexford in 1853.

There's no sign of an Edward Fortune but there are five listings for a Nicholas. Maybe one is the grandfather of your 3rd great grandfather.

Nicholas Fortune, Ballinacoolabeg, Ardcolm, Wexford
Nicholas Fortune, Ballydusker, Killinick, Wexford
Nicholas Fortune, Knockstown, Killegney, Wexford
Nicholas Fortune, Churchtown, Hook, Wexford
Nicholas Fortune, Baldwinstown, Kilcowan, Wexford

Grmbles, what do you know about Jane Young? Same name is found in Co. Wexford baptism registers as an adult convert. Perhaps there were a hundred Jane Youngs in that era. Perhaps you can learn something of your paternal lineage through Jane.
