Found this.

Olivia Crawford, died 29 August 1883, Ballievey House, Banbridge, Down.
Will probate 1883.

Dixie.

G. Crawford, Esq., of Ballievey House is mentioned in Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837. I wonder if Olivia would have been his spinster daughter or possibly a daughter in law.

Ulster Covenant (1912) has several Crawfords in Banbridge area including:
Isabella Crawford Balliney House Banbridge
Meline Crawford Ballievey Banbridge
(Down: West, Banbridge district, signed at Magherally Presbyterian Church)- check scanned copy of original for actual spelling of address.

I remember seeing an "Isabella Crawford" on the UC list, but I originally dismissed it because:

1- I think there was a seperate Isabella BORN to George Crawford, so this Crawford might be her maiden name.
2- I don't see her husband "Hugh" listed, which you would think would have also been on the list.

But now I'm not so sure now that I've seen so many other Crawfords listed to that address.

Well, I just ordered the 1901, and 1911 census return for Balleevy (including the estate). It will take a few weeks to get it in, but I'll know for sure who is on it.

My crawfords eventually moved to Canada around 1914, but the Canadia census's are all 100% online, and I don't see them on the Canadian census, so that would imply they must have been in Ireland at 1901 and 1911, so... who knows.  Worth the $10 to get the returns

If you think the Crawfords did go to Canada before 1911 it might be that the name is mistranscribed on the Canadian census but if they didn't leave Ireland until 1914 then you wouldn't find them.

I've ordered the 1901/1911 Ireland Census for the Balleevy house, so I'll know right away who is there, and all that good stuff.

However, learned something interesting while searching:
On the "other forum", I saw this note about CRAWFORD's in the Banbridge area:
Quote
I have traced family back to County Down, N. Ireland. A John Crawford emigrated from Ayrshire with two brothers apparently late 17th Century. John settled in County Down while the other two settled in County Antrim and County Derry. John had land near Newtownards and there was another farm near Donaghadee belonging to descendents of his.

Quote
Children of Col. John CRAWFORD were:
1. (Major) Robert CRAWFORD bc. 1726-28, Ireland; d. 8 Oct 1801, Lancaster Co., PA.
2. James CRAWFORD Sr. bc 1734, dc. 1777-79, Waxhaws Settlement, SC, m.1750 Jennette HUTCHINSON b.1740 Carrickfergus, co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, d.1774, son,
.....James CRAWFORD b.1752, d. March 1816 Chester PA
3. Joseph CRAWFORD bc. 1730-32.
4. Catherine CRAWFORD b. 1734.
5. Mary CRAWFORD b. 1736.
6. Elizabeth CRAWFORD b. 1738, 26 June 1763, Lancaster Co PA to John Elias (Ellis ?) HUTCHINSON,
7. George CRAWFORD b. 1740.
8. Arthur CRAWFORD b. 1740 (?).
9. William CRAWFORD b. 1744 d. 3 Aug 1826 Greene Co. PA m. Alice KENNEDY.

Then the interesting part:
Quote
"Descendants of the Emperor Charlemagne, Medieval and Modern Kings, Knights of the Garter and Sureties for the Magna Charta of A.D. 1215

    * 41. Charlemagne, King of France and the Holy Roman Empire, b 742 d 814 m 771 Hildegarde of Surabia
    * 37. Baldwin II, Count of Flanders, d 918 m 884 Elfrida, d 929, dau of King Alfred the Great
    * 32. Matilda (Maud) of Flanders, d 1083 m William the Conqueror, b 1027 d 1087, Duke of Normandy and King of England
    * 27. Gilbert de Clare the Surety, b ca 1180 d 1230 m Isabella Marshall
    * 24. Lady Mary Bruce m (2) Sir Alexander Fraser, d 1332 of Touchfraser, Stirlingshire, Scotland, Lord Chamberlain of Scotland
    * 15. Isabel Semphill m Robert, son of Malcolm Crawford of Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland
    * 14. Laurence Crawford of Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, m Helen, dau of Sir Hugh Campbell
    * 13. Hugh Crawford of Kilbirnie, m (1) Margaret Colquhoun
    * 12. Malcolm Crawford of Kilbirnie, m Margaret Cunningham
    * 11. John Crawford, b 1600 Ayshire, Scotland d 1676

This doesnt seem to be the same "John Crawford" from Ayshire, but perhaps it was his son that moved to the Banbridge area and settled?
If so, then I am a direct decendant of Charlamange.... :)

I have a Crawford connection to my family through Marriage:

Letitia Patton Crawford [my grandmother], b. 1885 Northern Ireland, married: Thompson McBride Livingston in Blefast on 22 Nov 1905 (I have marriage certificate).

At this marriage, Letitia's father was listed as William Crawford - retired Recruiting Sergeant R,I,R. 3 Glenallon St, Belfast. Born. approx. 1854.

Other research suggests the following:-
William was married to Margarey Watt.
Siblings to Letitia were:- Lizzie Crawford, b. 1879 and Hugh Crawford, b.1894.
I believe that Lizzie married a John Donaldson, b.1879.
I located a Hugh Crawford birth date as follows:- 01 May 1894 - 62 Derwent Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Could these be related the Crawford's in this note?

Thanks; Philip Livingstone

I do not think they are the same Crawfords.

The farthest back I have is to:
Hugh Crawford b ~ 1800 in Banbridge
James Crawford b 1820 married Rosanna Strain b 1828
James Crawford b 1847 married Ellen Scott b 1850

James and Ellen had Hugh and William J Crawford (b 1871)

Hugh Crawford b 1870
Isabella (Green) b 1860
Jane Crawford b 1896
Hugh Crawford b 1901
Sarah Crawford b 1898
William J Crawford b 1903
Isabella Crawford b 1907

Around 1908 they moved to Belfast, on Donegal Rd.
Here, Henry (b 1909) and Ruth (b 1912) were born.

In 1914, Hugh moved to Toronto.
In 1916, the rest moved to Toronto.
In 1918, they moved to Phily to live with Dan Green (cousins)
In 1920, they moved to South Boston.

We share some similar names, but the dates do not match up.
The 1911 Census puts about 100 William Crawfords near Belfast, with about 40 Hugh Crawfords.  Too common to make assumptions.

As it is, I'm still unable to match my Crawfords to "The Crawfords" of Banbridge. They ran a massive bleachworks factory that my relatives worked at. Could be related, or could be coincidence. Cant make any assumptions......

Thanks Nick.
Take your point, but other co-incidences:
Thompson Livingston (who married Letitia Crawford) was born at Tullyhugh, Ballymore, Country Antrim - about 6 miles from Banbridge.
I know that my Livingston family moved to Belfast by 1901, from this area.
My Great Grandfather (James Edward, b. ) was a Railway Clerk and worked on the GNR, his father was Richard Livingston (farmer. b.~ 1853) from Ballmacranellin, Lurgan, County Armagh.
Won't discount connection, but agree - more data needed.
Regards; Phil.

My GGGGGF "George Crawford" died in 1850, so the one you listed is likely his son, or grandson.

His wive Olivia ran the estate for the 30 years until she died in the 1880s

Valuation listings from the 1860s show another George Crawford owning nearby land, so its likely Olivia left the estate to him? (making him the first born?)

Hello Nick,

It looks as if Olivia Crawford, born 1802 Dublin, was a daughter of Robert Henry of Dalkey Lodge, Kingstown, near Dublin, and his wife Katherine Olivia Elder, born Newry, Co Down. George Crawford was born c1788 so may have been married previously. According to Olivia's will (PRONI), she and George had two surviving children, Katherine Robert "Kate" Crawford (wife of Robert Augustus Macrory) and George Crawford (married Isabella Lund).

It also looks as if Olivia's first marriage was to Capt James Gaston, who died in Co Cork in 1833, just a few months after their marriage. I haven't been able to find out who James Gaston's parents were, or whether there was a child born after his death. Since his marriage and death were announced in the Londonderry Sentinel, he might have been from that area.

Maureen
