Jane Crawford, born Portadown 1895
« on: Monday 19 March 07 21:48 GMT (UK) »
I know from a Canadian marriage license that:

Jane Crawford (my GGrandmother) was born in Portadown, on March 20th 1895

Her parents were Hugh Crawford and Isabel Green. Also born in Northern Ireland.

At some point, many of the Crawfords moved to Toronto, but I can not find any reference of them in Ireland.

Does anyone have any references to a Hugh, Isabel, and Jane Crawford in Portadown?

Hello Nick,

What denomination were the Crawford and Green families?

Presbytarian

I've since learned that Jane Crawford was born in Portadown, but actually lived in nearby Banbridge.

Isabels father was Patrick Green
Hugh's father was James Crawford
Both from Banbridge, born in the mid 1800's.

There were lots of Crawfords in Banbridge.  My understanding is that in the late 1700s, a family of Crawfords came over from Scotland, to Banbridge, and setup a large textile factory.

Thanks a bunch!

I was unable to track down any more information for "Patrick Green", since its a common name....
You gave 2 possible names: Jane Clarke, and Bridget Grimes.

Jane Clarke seems most likely for these 2 reasons:

The daughter of Isabella Green, and Hugh Crawford was JANE Crawford, and you USUALLY named your first born after your grandparent (at that time in Ireland)

Also, Bridget Grimes was married in 1974, which was AFTER Isabella Greene was born which would have been unlikely (at that time in Ireland).

At some point, the family moved from Banbridge to Portadown, and Lurgan is sorta in the middle, so that makes sense as well.

So THANKS!! I just added the name to my tree!!

As for Ellen Scott, and Hugh Crawford, it looks like Hugh was the child of George and Olivia Crawford (owners of a large Beetling factory). George was the son of Gilbert and Elizabeth Crawford of Gilford.

Most of the Crawfords in the Banbridge area seem to originate from Gilford Crawford.

My GGGGGF "George Crawford" died in 1850, so the one you listed is likely his son, or grandson.

His wive Olivia ran the estate for the 30 years until she died in the 1880s

Valuation listings from the 1860s show another George Crawford owning nearby land, so its likely Olivia left the estate to him? (making him the first born?)
