« on: Sunday 18 March 07 19:50 GMT (UK) »
I would like to know if Stephen Pennock who died 19 Feb 1809 in Rudston, had a will or probate.  Would also like to know when and where his wife, Jane (nee. Colley)Pennock died. She was born 08 Mar 1740 in Rudston daugther of William. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,
Prior to 1858 the granting of probate was carried out by ecclesiastical or church records but subsequently became a civil matter.
I could not find your Stephen or Jane Pennock however I have 3 probates in the name of Pennock from 1858 as mainly testators. Being an unusual name you may find these tie in with your Stephen and Jane Pennock somehow.

Elizabeth Pennock, York, testator
Mary Pennock, Whitby, executor
William Pennock, Lyth, testator

Let me know if you would like full details of these probates

Thanks for your quick reply.  Sure, I would like to have the details of those wills.  I have created a website for Yorkshire Pennocks and I could make a new page for info such as these in case the researchers for these lines contact me in the future.  I have a researcher whose ancestor came from York and then the family returned to York, so it's possible Elizabeth may belong to them.  I have not had any contact with the Whitby Pennocks or Lythe, which didn't have many as I found only one marriage  for a Pennock in Lythe (margaret) and no births in the IGI.  Of course that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Anyone reading this, if interested, my site is http://yorkshirepennocks.bravehost.com
