Thomas & Mary HABBERLEY marriage at St Johns Goldenhill circa 1818

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone out there could help me with this one?  I am trying to find a marriage for my 3rd great-grandparents Thomas & Mary HABBERLEY.  They certainly lived at Goldenhill soon after marriage if not before.

Thomas was born in 1796 in  Madeley, Ironbridge, Shropshire.  I don't know where Mary was born.  I know only one child for them, he was my 2nd great grandfather John HABBERLEY born 1819.  So I am not even sure if Thomas & Mary married in Goldenhill or before Thomas moved from Shropshire.  And marriage must have been not long before 1819 by Thomas's age.

Any help with this couple, any pointers even if it's not the marriage, would be really appreciated.  Especially any other children, as I am sure they must have had more but none that can be tied down by looking at the census.

Interestingly the grave stone for Thomas Mary and his second wife still exists at the front of St John the Evangelist's church in Goldenhill; see my website at:

sorry but this does not seem related to my query.  I was looking for Thomas Habberley and Mary - but you are quite right in that the spellings do vary with Habberly, Abberley, Abberly, etc., being quite commons variants!

well, that's a different matter then!  Thanks very much for getting back to me, and don't worry too much about the slip  !  All these names are enough to get anyone's head in a spin at times.....      Been there myself !!!!

Now then, you say the marriage was between Thomas Abberley and Mary, but I wonder what records you found this from and does it show any more details ?  I know registers and such didn't show as much information as the marriage certificates but if there's any more information that could help say this is the right marriage I'd like to find out.

My Thomas was a blacksmith, his parents were John HABBERLEY and Mary PALIN.  The JERVIS name is particularly interesting as Thomas has a second great-grandmother who was a JERVIS....

Thanks very much indeed Oonagh for what you have passed to me, but I wonder if there's any more information in that record or would I need to visit the actual records office in Shrewsbury ??

I am decended from the german familly from Wittenburg, Heberleig, anglasized to  Heberley.
I wondered if you might be talking about another branch of the same family?

I have ancestry back to Richard HABBERLEY born in 1670 in Shropshire, my 7th great-grandfather.  He lived at Little Wenlock.  There are lots of later mis-spellings of the surname - ABBERLEY, HABERLEY, HABBERLY, etc.....  I do think, therefore, my line does not have German roots unless you have details that far back in time?

The surname is quite rare, but does have it's roots in Shropshire.  There's a village of Habberley south-west of Shrewsbury, and also a district on the outskirts of Kidderminster carries the name.

Myself I am a HABBERLEY by direct male descent, but got stuck with a BROOKES surname thanks to Victorian morals.....

Sorry no connection, my hebberley was a sailor on the wrong side in the Napoleonic wars.  A kindly English capiton pulled him out of the water, and took him home, where he married the daughter of his saviour.  Good story  isn't it!!

My husbands family are also descendents of Johann Hebley (Heberley, Heberly!) , who would be my husbands 5x gr grandfather. His side comes down through Frederick Matthew Hebley, 3rd son of Johann.

If you have any info I would love to hear it.
