There is unfortunately a huge difference between paying £50 pounds for information about intimate family which proves invaluable and paying the same sum in order to make a minor step on a line of research. I agree that it is worthwhile in the former but frequently can't justify it in the latter case.

I agree, but in this case, we are talking about a gg grandfather. I often don't get indirect ancestors certificates unless I it will be the only place to obtain the information (as with my gg grandfather's sister's death cert to get parents' names, as they weren't on dear old gg granddaddy's), but for info on my direct line, especially something like these records, I would definitely save my pennies for that.
