1841 census lookup.
« on: Friday 16 March 07 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I hope I am in the right county!!!
I have a marriage certificate for the year 1843, Parish of Paddington, County Middlesex.
I am trying to trace the bride in the 1841 census. She was actually born in Dorset but I wondered if she was lodging and her landlord or even employer put the wrong county.
She is not in Dorset in 1841.
The address given on her marriage certificate is 20 Oxford Square. Her name is Elizabeth (she may be down as Eliza) Waldon/Walden/Waldron. She would be about 18.

Hello Melia

who did she marry?..........as where you find him you might find her?
what was her father's name and occupation?.....should be on the marriage cert?
who were the witnesses?.......are they family?

the 1841 would probably display her age as 15 (15-19=15)

this one below who its stated as being born Middlesex may possibly be a niece as she is listed below children of a younger age? ............ that unfortunately is the 1841 for you!

Hello Bryant,
The 1841 census is hard to work with i know!!!!
Well of the two you found the second one I suppose is a possibilty. I am assuming that Elizabeth would be living fairly near to where she married or at least to whom she married.
Here are the answers to some of your questions.
She married Thomas Grantham born 1823 Marylebone.
Her father's name was Robert Waldon and he was a dairyman, but they are living in dorset in 1841with her siblings.
The witness's were Joseph Ogden and Ann Ogden. Nothing to do with the Waldon family.

Hello Melia

I gather that Robert the dairyman is the one at Netherby, Ash, Dorset in 1841 as per below.................and Eliza aged 20 is not the one you seek?

1841
ROBERT WALDEN  50  DAIRY M   Y (BORN DORSET)
GRACE        "         50                  Y
ELIZA          "         20                  Y
GRACE         "         15                  Y
CHARLOTTE  "         12                 Y
ROBERT        "          8                  Y
GEORGE       "           6                  Y
-----------------

I do not see Thomas Grantham aged 17/18 (15-19 is the criteria I used) although by coincidence the Ogden's have someone who could qualify with a surname of Thomas Ogden whom I gather is not a blood son of theirs? ..........

1841
20 Shouldham Street, Marylebone
JOSEPH OGDEN  30  COACH SMITH JOURNEYMAN  Y (BORN MIDDX)
ANN           "        30                                               Y
SARAH       "        8                                                 N (NOT BORN MIDDX)
JOSEPH      "       3                                                 N
JOHN          "       1                                                 N
THOMAS     "       15                                               Y (BORN MIDDX)
------------------
*15-19=15 as per 1841

Do you have the name of Thomas Grantham's father/mother and father's occupation? if it was Josiah who was married to Sarah Coles and it appears to be .............. the IGI's show they had a child in 1808....which means by the time Thomas was born in 1823 they may well have been getting on a bit (relative to the time they lived in) and would have been in old age if alive in 1841?

Regards

Hello
Bryant,
Yes that is the family in Dorset. It did pose a bit of a quandry for ages as we weren't sure if Eliza was Elizabeth!!! But we now know there was definately an Eliza and an Elizabeth!!
Right Thomas Grantham's father was Joseph Grantham according to his marriage certificate. His occupation says"Cow Lush" (looks like lush but not sure what that is).
as you say, the Thomas with the Ogdens is about the right age!!!! I wonder!!!
