Cookley Parish Records look-ups - STROGER/STROWGER
« on: Friday 16 March 07 13:23 GMT (UK) »
I have a William Stroger yeoman who died around Mar 1652 in Cookley, Suffolk. He was married to Dorothy. The name Strowger has many variations. Children include a Gualtor [married around 1635] and a Clementia.
Please can you find any gems of information on this family in the Cookley records.

Hi Strow
If you are still interested I have looked up the marriage of William & Clemens in the Heveningham parish records.
"William Pitts & Clemens Stroger were married on the nineteenth day of April Ano.Dm 1632"
I do have the parish records for Heveningham & Cookley if I can help any further. Sorry I have not been on this site for ages so didn't see your request.
Best Wishes

Thank you for the exact date, I wonder if you could check something else that needs clearing up.
If you can see the original documents would you look to see if the parish clerk was in the habit of crossing his 'll' making it look like 'tt' as I have reason to belive that William's name is actually Pell.
Also can you see a marriage between a William Strowger, yeoman [any spelling will do ] and a Dorothy Corker about  1590 and William Stroger's birth-guessing here- about 1565+-

Hi Strow
The "i" is clearly dotted and the tt crossed with a single stroke.
The parish records are frustratingly unclear and I have been sitting here willing the letters to magically transform into a readable form! Alas no such luck. No clear signs of the marriage or birth but I did find a marriage in 1563 - it could be Jeffery Strowger & Elizabeth (it looks like Sottinge) in January.

Thanks for looking. I did wonder whether the christian name William also had the two 'll' crossed through.
Just retrieved my file - Clemens was daughter of William and Dorothy and they also had a son Gualtor c.1592 so they would have married later than I said before, about !590 ish, but I think she came from Sotterly. Any Strowgers are interesting and I have not found a Jeffrey before -great, and he is old enough to have fathered my William. Have you the exact date of this marriage . please.
Gualtor had at least six children in Cookley, but it is the really early dates which are most fascinating.

Hi,
I have lot of my family after 1650 and have tied them together with wills . I hit a brick wall in the earlier birth dates with  Gualtor and Clemens births to William Stroger and Dorothy. Later Gualter is a yeoman of Chediston.
