I'm looking for information on a John Donovan born c1838 possibly in Co Cork His father was named Florence Donovan and in 1858 John married Catherine Flynn (also from Ireland somehere) in Aldgate, London. By 1858 he was living in Whitechapel, where his son Florence Donovan was born at 9 Plough Street on 13/9/1858 and by 1871 was living at 16 Buckle Street, Whitechapel.

If you have any info please let me know.

Hiya Kas and Matt,

I'm assisting the grand daughter of a Donovan who was born in Cork at the moment. My current search is in Belfast where the family were living at the time of the Blitz in the 1940s.

Jerry (Jeremiah) Donovan was born in Cork where his uncle was a land steward on a large estate. I looked at Griffiths Valuation of Ireland (1848 - 64)www.failteromhat.com There were not as many Donovans in Cork as I expected. There's a possibility that your families, that of Roxy's on another thread here and the family that were in Belfast may be related at some point along the line. BTW Jerry moved from Cork to Dublin, Dublin to Derry and Derry to Belfast.

All the Best, Chris

What we know about my grandfather:

Jeremiah Donovan born in May of 1883.  Parents Jeremiah Donovan (farmer) and Norah Lyons.  Witness to first marriage was Kate Donovan.  First wife was Marianne Egan (born Kings County 1882 - father Michael Egan).  Married at Spring Hill Church in Lota Beg 1906.

Jeremiah was orphaned as a child and raised by relatives.  He spent time in Blackrock and in Blarney.  His uncle John Donovan was a land steward at a large estate in Blarney.  John was married to May and had at least 2 daughters, Honorah and Marie.  Honorah was a year older than Jerry and Marie was a year younger.  This was at the time of the 1901 census.  May had died.  Jerry was a butler at one of the houses in Lota Beg, in Glanmire.  After his marriage to Marianne (a governess/schoolteacher), they lived in Cork City.  They later moved to Dublin for a short period of time and then moved to Derry and later Belfast.  Rumor has it that my granddad had a falling out with his family and never spoke to them.  He worked for the Jackson family in Lota Beg we think.  He was very well educated.  About 5'7" with blue eyes and sandy red/brown hair.  Very quiet and dignified.  His children were Marie (Dec. 1907 - Cork City), Henry "Harry" (born 1909 Dublin), Margaret Mary "Rita" (born Dec. 3, 1910 - Derry), Michael Francis "Frank" (born Feb 4, 1912 - Derry) and Geoffrey Thomas (born July 16, 1913 - Derry - later died at age 12 in Belfast of gangrene of the foot).  Rita died of a bad heart and influenza in 1926.  He remarried in Belfast to Mary Ethel McCormick and was father of Gabrielle, Alice, Christina, Paul, Jeremiah and Josephine.  There was also a Brigid and Norah.  Norah died at age 13 months the same week as Rita.  Several other children died in infancy - Patrick and Huh  Appreciate any help.  Also, he worked as a waiter in Dublin, Derry and Belfast.
Thanks,
Mary Kathleen Donovan Springowski

P.S.,
My uncles Harry and Frank used the last name O'Donovan.  Granddad may have stopped using the O' when he went North.  Uncle Harry also attended boarding school in Dublin.

Spring, I know it's a long time since this thread was last active but it's an interesting post and I had to comment, i'm currently looking for information on my 2nd great grandmother Bridget Donovan Meagher from Blackrock, Cork. I believe her brother was a Patrick Donovan from Blackrock who's occupation was listed as 'Butler' on the 1901 census. Bridget and Patrick's parents were Daniel & Mary Leahy Donovan,  I'm wondering if they are possibly connected to your Cork Donovan's considering the occupation of Butler wasn't very common in Cork at the turn of the  20th century - ken

O'Donovan / Donovan - I am researching one Mary Donovan (b 1815), daughter of John Donovan (b 1785?) and Ellen Sullivan (probably) from Clonakilty.

Family story is that Mary followed her father John to Australia in 1834 (he was probably a convict who was transported about 1821). They both died in Wyndham, NSW in about 1860/61. She was only 48 and is my ancestor. I too would love to connect to the Donovan Clan in Ireland.
Donovans of Clonakilty, Cork, Powers of Waterford, Cork, Kilkenny, Tipperary.
