Which Church Please?
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 21:37 GMT (UK) »
I believe I have found the death of William Selby Oct quarter 1887, aged 47 years.

He is shown on the 1881 Census at 12 St John's Cottages, St Mary, Nottingham.

Could anyone please tell me which church would have been nearby where he may be buried at please?

Thanks.

St Mary's is in the centre of Nottingham, this site should  hopefully help you.

Hi Fek

It would probably have been St Johns, Narrow Marsh.

If you go to http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/

Go to search the images and click accept then:

Keywords: St Johns
Specific town: Nottingham Narrow Marsh
Specific area: Nottingham

You will get 4 images of the church with details at the side.

I think this explains why the death doesn't come up on the NFHS Burials CD as it is St Johns and not St Marys.

Considering the date wouldn't the burial be just as likely, if not more likely, to have occurred in a Nottingham cemetery?

Hi Valda

You certainly have a point. The funeral may have been at a church but the burial may have been at a cemetery.

Fek: If you contact Nottingham City Council Cemetery Officer they may be able to help.

If you click on the cemetery there is an email to contact the superintendant.

Try the General Cemetary first. This is most likely for the area. They have been very helpful to me in the past.

Also Nottm Archives may be able to help as they have lists of burials.

Thank you all for your kind help and information.

I have looked at your links and have emailed the General Cemetery officer as you suggested.
