Hey folks, hopefully some of you will see this. Any of you have any McClellands male relatives that could take a Y dna test? I've taken one and my family are from Newry county Down where i still live today. I've traced back to the early 1800s thanks to some people here but to get beyond that> YDNA will be the biggest clue.

essentially if you test a male Y heir and they match with me then you know for certain we are related.  I did have a YDNA match with the surname McLellan and ftdna predicts we shared a common ancestor in 1760 so im just missing one or two generations.

I’m also researching the McClelland family, from County Down.

I’ve come to a bit of a dead end on this side unfortunately for now, only going back as far as John J McClelland (1915-1997) who married Susanna Kearney (1915-1994).

I have Thomas McClelland down as a potential father for John but no other information on this side unfortunately.

Hey Jasmine,

I haven’t come across any Thomas McClelland.

I’d suggest if possible to get a Y dna test done on that side of the family if you have any possible candidates. There is around 400 mcclelland testers on familytreedna who have taken tests so you’d very likely get grouped and at least know or have an idea on how to proceed with far out relations to contact etc. it would narrow it down / takes out part of the guesswork.

There's a birth for John Joseph McLelland in 1915 Newcastle, Co. Down- parents Thomas McLelland & Susan Murphy-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1915/01382/1568381.pdf

Thomas McClelland & Susan Murphy married in 1902-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1902/10289/5745114.pdf
By 1911 there are 3 children-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Newcastle/King_Street/243438/

You can search the Irish Genealogy site for other children (up to 1921) and GRONI (index only up to births 100 years or more).

John J. McClelland's marriage certificate should list father's name and occupation as well as where the groom was residing at the time.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Can you give a date for this marriage, and where it happened?

Thanks.

There may not have been a marriage (marriage wasn't in N.I, Ireland, Scotland or England/Wales), alternatively names are incorrect.

This seems to be Jasmine's tree with a birth image uploaded for John (same one Aghadowey mentioned) but few supporting sources for the McClelland's
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/185559560/person/142430446674
another is https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/3226533/person/112630093479

Seems to be tracing back from the birth of Patricia McClelland Birth 13 Mar 1944 Northern Ireland death 28 Nov 1989 England. Death Bath area.

The starting point should really be Patricia's birth cert from GRONI to confirm father and her mother's forname and maiden surname.
If desired, & suspect Patricia married in N.I. her marriage cert (with locations & father's details) would also be available from GRONI. Both are obviously within the no access from home cut-offs so require a £15 paper cert if a personal visit to their research room is impractical. If details are uncertain for online form filling phone them and discuss as will do a 5 year search and email before generating the cert.
