William J Hickox
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 08:48 GMT (UK) »
I am interested to hear from anyone regarding the above person. Apparently born in Ealing in 1862, he ended up in Bucks, marrying Ada Coleshill in 1895, and appearing on the 1901 Census in Langley Marish.  No sign on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census. Any thoughts ?  -  The name Hickox is open to wide interpretation I suspect !
Devon - Day (Appledore), Vyvyan + Hill (Plymouth)
Somerset - Yard (Ashcott etc) Walters (High Littleton)
Worcestershire etc - Caldicott (Alcester + Inkberrow)
Scotland - McShiells/Shields/McIntyre (Dalry)
Most of these ended up in Cardiff during 19thC

Have you got his Marriage Cert ?

It will hopefully show his fathers name .....

Alternatively, I'd wager that this is his Birth Index entry - obtaining the Cert would give both parents names ...

Hi Newfy - we've sent off for his birth certificate, and we'll probably try his marriage certificate after we have seen that.

Put this 1861 Census finding on the back burner until you obtain more details ...

RG9/458; Folio: 68; Page: 4 - Hampton, Middx
Hampton Court

In the Household of Charlotte Cureton Widow Fundholder born Essex

Eliza Hickox 14  Servant Housemaid born Twickenham

Looks like her mother and sister are also in the area ....

Just following up on that lass for a minute, she's the only female Hickox to marry in the area ... (yet transcribed)

Marriages Mar 1871

HICKOX  Elizabeth    Kingston  Vol 2a Page 275
Hopkins  Evan Henry     Kingston  2a 275
Kitchin  Isabella Sarah     Kingston  2a 275
Smith  Frederick     Kingston  2a 275

So, if this hunch isnt a total wild goose chase, she'd be on the 1871 census as either Hopkins or Smith ... and if theres a son William J ...... only thing is, the other Hickox in 1861 Hampton was an Elizabeth .....  ::)

Thanks for those - it's nice to find some people of the same name in the area. There seemed to be a lot in the Sussex and Herefordshire areas.
