1871 Census - PIKE
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 12:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi, could anyone help me to find the following family on the 1871 Census.

Joseph Pike - Aged about 28 - 33 - born in Norfolk
Either a Elizabeth Pike or Mary Ann Pike as wife - aged about 25 - 35
Susan pike - Daughter - Aged about 6
Emily Pike - Daughter - Aged about 4
Joseph Pike - Son - Aged about 2

In 1881 the family were living in Swansea.
In 1861 the were living in Aberdare.

Thanks

Can't say that I have made much progress, but  a couple of interesting points have arisen.

Joseph is noted on the 1861 Census as being born in Norfolk, and being a greengrocer in Cwmdare, Aberdare.  In the 1871 Census (where they continue to be elusive), a Susan Pike, widow aged 49 from Norfolk is living in Cwmdare, Aberdare and working as a greengrocer.

Secondly, Emily is described in the 1881 census as being 14 and born in Cardiff, but I can't find her birth on the complete BMD at that time. More research needed here I suspect.

The written detail on the 1881 census is so poor, that you can understand how complete families just disappear !
Devon - Day (Appledore), Vyvyan + Hill (Plymouth)
Somerset - Yard (Ashcott etc) Walters (High Littleton)
Worcestershire etc - Caldicott (Alcester + Inkberrow)
Scotland - McShiells/Shields/McIntyre (Dalry)
Most of these ended up in Cardiff during 19thC

Hi thanks for replying Chris.

It looks like this may be Joseph's mum, as she was a Susan. Ages differ slightly but nothing new with this family!.

Joseph was still around all the way upto to 1901 census. He either remarried or cohabited with a Mary Ann. Obviously the years around 1871 where I can't find them, is when his wife changes from Elizabeth to mary Ann.

I noticed that there is a marriage between a Joseph Pike and a Mary Ann Burns in Cardiff in 1877  (Apr-May-June Vol 11a Page 358), so that may be him.  No deaths or re-marriages that fit in with Elizabeth Pike however. If Emily Pike was born in Cardiff in 1867 (ish) despite there being no BMD, and he remarried in Cardiff in 1877, it does suggest that they may have been in the area during that period.

There is a Mary Ann Burns living at John Street Roath Cardiff in the 1871 census, but there could be a slight discrepancy with the age of the Mary Ann Pike in the 1881 Census

Have you found out about the Pike family in 1871?
This is my Greatgrandfather's family. My Grandmother is Susan and I have searched for her birth but cannot find it.
Would you like to know more and are you related?
