OK, what's the first Durham census that you have him on?
when/where did he marry?

Who was the bride/grrom in the "mid 1870s".
Name, age birthplace, location please.

Again, it would be helpful if you would reveal some more of the information which you already hold should you wish to progress this. Such as the 1843 marriage details...

Richard Wilkinson lived at 5 Vane Terrace, Seaham Harbour (not Dawdon) in 1861 with his wife and four children. There is a photograph of this street on my website www.east-durham.co.uk

Hi Compo

Although the 1841 census for the Whitstable area is missing, I wouldn't be surprised if your Richard was part of this family found there later :-\

1851

High St, Seasalter, Kent

Richard WILKINSON head mar 58 mariner b.Gravesend Kent
Ann wife mar 58 b.Whitstable
Ann dau 24 b.Whitstable

HO107/1625 folio 486 page 7
...................

1861

Oxford Street, Seasalter, Kent

Amy WILKINSON head (marital status unclear) charwoman b.Whitstable
Amy Ann dau unm 30 general servant b.Whitstable

RG9/524 folio 115 page 12
.....................

There are some baptisms for Seasalter on the IGI (batch number I013499) but only females at present ie. Mary Elizabeth (Richard & Emma) 1820 and Annie (Richard & Annie) 1827 http://www.familysearch.org

Nice website there Seaham.  I will have a better look later as we have a relative that "migrated" there from Kent too.
