Thank you so much Ladyhawk for taking the time to research this. I've been a year researching all 4 sides of my family and switch from one to another. I have only started Sentance a few weeks ago. I haven't been paying for any certificates and am aware I can get these and will do if I get a brick wall. Great idea to get the other marriage witnesses and signatures, something I haven't yet thought about.  Forgot to mention, but you will have seen, Fanny Sentance was another witness on my Elizabeth's marriage and she was on one of John's children's marriage, although obviously not necessarily the same Fanny, but with that and Henry Horton being a witness too (Mary Horton's father is Henry Horton so if it's the same Elizabeth, he would be her grandfather). The signatures of Elizabeth do look similar, don't you think, but she messed up her signature on the other one. I'm interested now to see Fanny's signature so can check for that next time I visit the library as that's where I access Ancestry free.  All the info you gave about the children are what I had seen on FamilySearch so that is the one on there, but his middle name is Isaac.  You could be right about the William being her brother as errors must happen all the time.  My Elizabeth married Henry Bartholomew but I've seen records with him John Bartholomew and Henry Bartholomew Carter (his father was called Henry Bartholomew Carter as he married a woman called Carter). Later on Henry dropped 'Bartholomew' and was known as just Henry Carter.

Thank you again.  I have access to all John Issac Sentance's family on FamilySearch. I checked out his brother William but dates don't fit.  I'll be visiting the library again shortly to access Ancestry so what I need to do is check for Fanny as a witnesses at all John Issac's children's weddings, including Mary's you gave, to see if signatures match.

I have already done the Bartholomew/Carter side of things thank you. I didn't make it clear when I mentioned them, that I was pointing out the difference in the use of names when I was agreeing with you about William possibly being entered in error. What you did give is the son John Henry Bartholomew's marriage date so I can get a marriage certificate hopefully from Ancestry as they uploaded Sheffield ones recently.

Not sure if you have the burial information for JHBC and his parents... the information is available on sheffieldindexers, gives cemetery name & grave number
search burials, enter cemetery name and surname Carter

I can't see any other marriages with Fanny as a witness

There's a marriage in 1903 for a Joseph age 23 father John, Shepherd
the witnesses are a Mabel & R SENTANCE

There are these two birth entries

SENTANCE, JOSEPH  WALTON     STEVENITT

Thank you - still difficult to tell with Fanny's signature. They look similar, but smaller. Signatures I've seen don't seem to vary much from one person to another.  I suppose it was how they were taught to write back then.  JHBC and Elizabeth's only daughter was Mabel too - I was thinking named after her sister, but that would have been a popular name.

I'm sure it's the same family. Married in the same church too and I've not come across another family in my research so far that fits dates and area.
