Clifford Davies m Bertha ? 1947
« on: Monday 05 March 07 20:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find marriage records for 1947 for London.

My gran's brother, Clifford Davies (b. 1911 Glamorgan, Wales) married Bertha ? in 1947 in All Saint's Church.  He died in 1950 and she and her son subsequently moved to Australia where she passed away several years later of cancer.  No one in the family knows where their son (Peter) is now.  :-\

I'd like to find the marriage record in order to find her maiden name.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to look online?

Thanks!
Karen

Hi Karen,

You can search on www.ancestry.co.uk for free using the complete index; you will have to search quarter by quarter for 1947.

Good luck,

Hello, Karen,

I had a quick look at the complete Birth indexes for the name of Clifford Davies for 1947 & found that there were 16 entries throughout the country.   I felt this was perhaps a bit daunting for anyone not used to searching the indexes as, altho' the spouse's maiden is shown, the christian name isn't.  The next step, after finding the one you think is the right one, is to cross reference, by entering the spouse's maiden name for the quarter of the year, ie 1947.   Then looking down the list for that surname, you should find the husband's surname shown, together with the same distict, volumn number & page no.

I saw that one entry for Clifford Davies was for Islington & I knew there was an All Saints Church there, so I checked the cross reference for the district Islington, Sept. quarter of the year & the spouse's maiden name & I found.

Clifford Davies = Bertha RAWDING
Sept. ¼  1947  Islington  vol no 5c  page 2615

It is possible to order certificates online quoting the details shown above at the followng site.

Good luck

Meliora,  thanks for the info!!  I'm going to send away for that certificate and see if that is the right marriage.

I do have another question tho - on ancestry.co.uk how do I search for marriages after 1915?  When I enter a person I know married in 1944 no marriages after 1915 will come up - it doesn't matter who I enter, it's always the same.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is there a secret to searching for later marriages?

Are you looking at the freeBMDs or the complete BMDs for the 1944 marriage ?     The freeBMDs are nowhere near complete.

Ancestry.co.uk have the complete as well as the freeBMDs & you should be able to access both for free.
