Cotswoldhills/meles,

Did you get anywhere with this one?

If not, I might be able to pop over that way next week.

That would be great if you have the time and it's not too much trouble. :)

I had a good wander around Hampton yesterday, but I’m fairly certain Kempton Villas are no longer there.

Following up Pauline’s census refs, there are 3 references to Kempton Villas on the 1901 census:
RG13/671/fo 48/pages 39 and 40
RG13/671/Fo 81/page 52

Map of the area is here

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ln/

The ref at folio 81 is in Linden Rd (just to the left of the railway station). The refs at folio 81 are quite close by but south of the railway line.

On the 1891 census, 2 Kempton Villas is at RG12/616/Fo 39 in Hain (?) Hill Park, which seems to be the section south of the railway line.

Linden Rd is a now street of terraced houses (probably Edwardian). The area south of the railway now has a mixture of 20th century houses (Edwardian through to quite modern), a community hall and some small warehouse type premises. I couldn’t find a Hain Hill Park, but I did find some of the other houses on the census pages. Berkeley House is a very imposing 3 story detached house. Rose Hill is an even more impressive building set in its own grounds.

See http://www.richmond.gov.uk/local_history_rosehill.pdf

These are both on Upper Sunbury Road. The opposite side of the road has the Water works buildings etc, leading down to the river.

I’m sure the church would be St Mary’s, which is very close by.

I took a photo of Linden Rd then my camera packed up, but I’d be happy to take more of the area if you are interested.

You've probably sorted all this out by now. I've been offline for some time. I was brought up in Hampton, on the Upper Sunbury Road, just up the road from Kempton Park racecourse. I can only imagine that your address was further down in that direction - though there is not much before it becomes Sunbury! The parish church in Hampton is definitely St Mary's. St James' was a more recent church (not the parish church, therefore).

I understand that my Great Grandparents (Mitchell) lived at 2 Kempton Villas in and around 1900. He was a Working Fitter with the Metropolitan Water Board. As I understand it, the housing was very poor, so was probably demolished and they went to live in Hampton Hill.

The details on the Marriage Certificate would be of interest to me.

Your great grandfather's occupation makes sense - off the Upper Sunbury Road is the Victorian waterworks which has supplied the whole of greater London. St Mary's church (the parish church) is just up the road heading towards Hampton Court.

I understood from my late Mum that Kempton Villas were Water Board houses. Looking on Google Earth, there has been a lot of development in Kempton Road. It seems my Grandad and Great grandfather worked for the MWB. As I did when younger, 18 to 28.
