Thank you sillgen,

No, I'm not a member of the Sussex FH Group.  I find it hard to determine how worthwhile membership would be for all my areas of interest and try to prioritise them.  I have a worldwide subscription to ancestry (giving me best value) but that is about it at the moment.

Unfortunately I am not able to visit to see the records themselves as I am in NZ these days so rely heavily on internet access, hence prioritising costs.  I will however investigate the Sussex group as I am at a brick wall for this line.

many thanks for your notes too.  MUCH appreciated.  My late aunt investigated this line MANY years ago before computers and has William's parent s as Edward and Elizabeth but i do feel there is something not quite right despite knowing how meticulous she'd have been.  There have been some traditional naming patterns too of which Edward would not particularly fit and James and Mary would but nothing is certain!

Thanks again for the hint

Jo

Just noticed I put the wrong century for the burial.  I have amended it.    SFHG is only around £12 a year.    Heathfield was quite a centre for non conformists so that might be another area to research.
There is a burial for Mary Goldsmith age 72 at Hellingly on 6th Sep 1799.
