Emigrated to Australia 1950
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 18:42 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out what happened to Andrew Coulter.  Born Co. Antrim 1920.  One of 17 children.  Emigrated to Australia and arrived Brisbane July 1950.  Was followed by a brother David and sister Robina (Lena?) sometime later.

Extended family in Co. Antrim lost contact many years ago.

I do not expect a live Andrew Coulter.  Have seen someone of that name in a cemetery index in South Australia (1982) saghs.org.au.  But am unsure how I can find out if this may be the one I am looking for.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the Deaths Index for South Australia only goes to 1972, BorninKent. I checked the telephone directory and there are 100 Coulter entries, so that is not much help. The SAGHS entry could lead to a little more information if I was going to their library - I might be able to locate a newspaper notice which may give some details, but I have no idea when I will be getting there again.

I hope someone else can help you - if not, I can put it on my list of things to check when I do get there - but that could be months away.

Hi borninkent,

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

This is not your Andrew buried in SA in 1982. This chap was buried in Whyalla aged 22.

Good Luck with your search. Since your Andrew arrived in Brisbane perhaps some of our Queensland Members can assist you.

Cheers Kris  :D

Hallo borninkent,
The QLD State Library has an 'Ask Us' /'Ask a Librarian' service (query form on-line) - they will check their records including electoral rolls (past & present).

Hi borninkent,

There is a David COULTER listed on the Ryerson Index at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm

Make sure you read the page on Requesting a Lookup as they have a very set process in place with a large team of volunteers involved

Another source to check would be the Australian Federal Electoral Rolls which are available at most big libraries in Australia and Electoral Office branches around the country. Unfortunately the Australian Electoral Rolls are not as easily accessable as the English ones. It will be some time before I'm at a library to check them for you. Maybe someone else can check these for you

It would also be worth checking the Australian White Pages online at www.whitepages.com.au where there are some COULTERs listed in Queensland. You could write to them.

I hope this has been of some assistance for you.
