Wardrobe Dealer
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 00:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a 2x gt grandmother who was a wardrobe dealer in a 1891 census, in Edmonton.

Is this someone who just sells clothes?  :-\

Thanks
Cat

According ot one of my favourite sites

Thanks Kerry!

What a great site! Saved to favs  ;D

Thats not very glamourous is it! Just after i posted this i actually saw another post saying it was someone who cleared out a deceased persons wardrobe!

Family say her daughter had a corsetry shop, either worked or owned it, so clothes must be in their blood. (old and new huh)

Thanks
Cat :)

Hi Cat

I think I prefer dealer in second hand clothes to the description of someone who cleared out a deceased eprson's wardrobe but on the other hand you couldn't have afforded to waste anything in those days and just think she was into recycling long before the rest of us!!!

A Wardrobe Dealer aka dress-agent, second-hand clothier, was a retail shopkeeper who sold all kinds of cast-off clothing obtained  by calling from house to house and at auctions, also bought mis-fits from tailors. They sold from a private house, shop, store, or market stall. They also repaired the garments ready for sale as necessary. "Dictionary of Occupational Terms"

I just came across an ancestor with "Wardrobe Dealer" as occupation on the 1911 census, so found this post very informative, thanks  ;D
