Chipy,

You can search the 1871 census yourself on ScotlandsPeople.  This is a pay-per-view site but the charges are (in my view) reasonable.  I note, from the free search on that site (one needs to register but that is free), there is only one William DICK in the 1871 census in Paisley and he is the right age (25).  If your William remained in Paisley, this could well be him.

You say that William DICK was born about 1845 in Paisley, Renfrewshire of parents David & Agnes.

If he is the following, then you have more precise information from extracted entries in the IGI on the (free) FamilySearch site - William DICK, parents David DICK & Agnes MCKAIG, b 16 Jun 1845, bap Jul 1845.  The same parents (married 23 Aug 1844 in Paisley) also had John b 26 Mar 1849, Agnes b 29 Apr 1851, David b 9 Dec 1855, Grace b 19 Jun 1853, Sarah b 8 Jun 1859.

Hi,

Re the 1901 potential William - might this be a red herring?
According to the IGI, a William Edwd. DICK married an Annie HARDIE in Alyth, Perthshire in 1867.
There are a couple of possible Perthshire-born William DICKs - William b 1845 in Kincardine by Doune, and William b 1850 in Longforgan.

Going back to Paisley, I wonder whether the following might be the marriage of Chipy's William - William DICK m Elisabeth MCFARLANE, Paisley, 9 Oct 1871.  In the light of Scottish naming patterns, this is perhaps a likely marriage given that William & Elisabeth had a son named David (name of the father of Chipy's William) in Paisley in 1871.

Incidentally, a free search on ScotlandsPeople finds that an Agnes DICK, other surname MCKAIG, died in Paisley in 1889, age 73.

There is obviously much to be discovered about this family from records available on  ScotlandsPeople.

I have only found this! Names weren't spelt always correctly in those days (for example from my familly: 1871 Burchell to 1881 Birchall to 1901 Burchell, etc.)

Could William Dick have been married before? Then re-married to Ann Hardie!

Possible match:

.

Maybe you could order his marriage certificate with Ann Hardie to see if he was a widower/bachelor at the time of the marriage.

Good Luck.
