My Gatton family moves across the East Grinstead/Lingfield boundary as well, by literally being on the wrong side of the road.

There are a lot of Langridge families in Worth, so try Horne, Burstow, Godstone etc as well.

Does George consistently give Forest Row as his place of birth? I don't know how well you know the area, but Forest Row is a village about 3 miles south of East Grinstead and was part of East Grinstead parish.

Would it be a good idea to get a marriage certificate to prove who George's father was?    Or at least search for the marriage in the parish register?    I know it costs a bit but one certificate can save hours of work going down the wrong line.  Neither Samuel nor Frances appear as names for his children which is a little odd if they are his parents.  Getting a child's birth would confirm the Eliza's maiden name too.

Hi
Phil - George gives Forest Row as his birth on the 1881 census:
1881 England Census
Cherry Orchd Road 1 Park Cottages, Croydon, Surrey
Geo. LANGRIDGE   Head   M   Male   63   Forest Row, Sussex, England   Carpenter  (1818 )
Eliza LANGRIDGE   Wife   M   Female   55   Croydon, Surrey, England
Harry LANGRIDGE   Son      Male   22   Croydon, Surrey, England   Painter
Wm. LANGRIDGE   Son      Male   20   Croydon, Surrey, England   Labr
Alfd. LANGRIDGE   Son      Male   16   Croydon, Surrey, England   Stable Lad
Lillie LANGRIDGE   Daur      Female   14   Croydon, Surrey, England   Scholar

Looking at the map I realise Forest Row is close to EG a lot of my Langridges give Forest Row EG as there POB

Andrea - I also use a naming theory to try to establish children and parents. On BMD there is a James born Mar 1848 Croydon which fits James son of George on the 1851 census
  1851 England Census
Middle Heath Lane, Croydon, Surrey
Croydon, Surrey
Eliza Langridge 23  ( 1828 )
George Langridge 28  Builders Labourer ( 1823 )
George Langridge 8 Months
James Langridge 3
I viewed the image as there was a star beside it and although the image is very unclear this James had a middle name of I believe Samuel - could be wishful thinking on my part  :P

Samuel  45 carpenter
Fanny 45
Tilly? 20
Henry 20
George 15
Samuel 15
Lucy 10
Charles 7
Anne Histed 3 all b county which is Surrey
Annoyingly I cannot read the occupation for George.

Hi Andrea
Yes seen that on the 1841 - I transcribed Georges occupation as Labr ( Labourer ) and Tillie looks like Fillie to me so could be short for Philadelphia

I wonder where Mary Ann is in 1851?   Seems odd that a six year old is not with relatives of some sort.  Have you found her?

Is Tillie/Fillie likely to be Lillie, as I see that George has a daughter of that name?

Andrea - Can't find Mary on 1851, she could be Eliza's daughter and have her name whatever it is  ::)

Phil - Looking at the writing of the other names on the same page I am leaning more towards Fillie than Lillie  ;)
