Can anyone help, please? COLERIDGE COMPLETED
« on: Friday 02 March 07 10:55 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching an actress (stage name Amy COLERIDGE) whose second husband was an actor (stage name Percy ANSTEY). They m in UK in 1906. Her maiden name was Amy Louise COWBRICK and his real name was Percival Louis PAGE-PHILLIPS.

Amy is my real interest, and she d in South Africa on 4 August 1951. There's a big hole in what I've found out about her later life - i.e.  nothing after 1919, in UK.

I can supply info about her first husband, and her son if that would help. They were also actors, and her son also died in South Africa, in 1924.

I'm sorry this is all a bit complicated, but can anyone help fill in the gap, please?

Thanks!

Colin

Hi Colin

Did you try searching the National Archives?  I found this reference which may be of interest to you:

DEPOT     NAB
SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 1810/1951
DESCRIPTION          PEARCE, AMY. (BORN COWLRICK) (ALIAS COLERIDGE, AMY) BORN IN ENGLAND.  PRSP. PEARCE, ARCHIBALD BROUGH. NO TRAC
STARTING  19510000
ENDING    19520000

(PRSP means "previous spouse")

Unless you already have had a copy of this, it file will contain her Death Notice which will, depending on how accurately the info was completed, give you her parents names, her place of birth, her age at decease, her husband's names, her residential address, her occupation, her children's names, whether she left a will, etc.  The file may also include her liquidation & distribution accounts.

Hope it helps

Moira

Thank-you for that. No, I hadn't tried the South African National Archives. How do I get into that, please?

What you found is intriguing, because it reveals that Amy married for a third time! I hadn't previously encountered Archibald Brough PEARCE, and wonder if he was an actor too.

I have come across the mis-spelling of COWBRICK as COWLRICK before, in her birth record on ancestry. Perhaps it's not altogether surprising that she adopted the stage name COLERIDGE ...

Best wishes

Colin

Hello

I have sent you a personal message, but it has just occurred to me that, as a newbie, you may have been unfamiliar with that facility, so I am pasting it below. You'll gather that my interest is mainly in Amy's 1st husband, because there is just a distant possibility I may be remotely related to him (unlikely, but I do now know his reason for picking his stage name). Anyroadup:

In response to your query, I should say straight away that I am extremely unlikely to to be related. I have HAVILAND in my tree, and so was very interested in Amy's first husband. He used the stage name William HAVILAND, but after investigation I found that he was actually William Alexander IRWIN. Nevertheless, I have pursued him and his family because I have a long standing interest in the theatre, and particularly in the 19c theatrical company of Sir Henry Irving (for other reasons, which  I can bore you with at great length given the slightest encouragement).

I was aware of his two wives, the divorce, and her three husbands. Also of the two offspring of their marriage. My research also led me to several other actorly HAVILANDs, some related, some not.

Intrigued that you were a COWLRICK! Websites are notoriously unreliable, but I also have great wodges of paperwork. The name as shown on the USA marriage certificate is ambiguous. The UK divorce document, however, states it clearly as  COWBRICK! Nevertheless if your relationship with Amy is direct then I fully accept that my previous assumption must have been incorrect.

Presumably you have pictures of Amy. There are a few on the net, including a cigarette card of her. There is also info on her in the Theatre Museum Archive in London.

I'd be thrilled to hear about your relationship and any results of your own research which you feel able to share with me.

Good luck

Colin

Hullo There I am a different person from the one who is researching Amy Coleridge's life. My interest is simply this:
My mother is now 87 and loved Amy. Ms
Coleridge was her acting teacher.  So it is just to do with memories that I have this interest on my Mum's behalf.
My mother's Mum died and so Amy was an important figure in her life and she greatly admired Amy Coleridge's
artistry. Best
