Kisler family - Whitechapel 1860ish?
« on: Wednesday 24 November 04 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to track down the family of Jacob Kisler who appears to have moved around a lot (mostly London). I have the family in Ipswich in 1871, but their daughter Margaret was born in Whitechapel in c1860. I also have information on Kislers (presumably this family) running two pubs around this time -  "Prince of Orange", Fieldgate street, Whitechapel and the "White Hart", Leman Street, Goodman's Fields. However, their next daughter appears to have been born in Stratford, Essex in c.1863.

The family are as follows, (with their supposed ages in 1861):

Jacob 26, wife Mary 22, children (Elizabeth died 1859 aged 18months), Margaret newborn.

By family repute, Jacob's widowed mother, Elizabeth Ann Kisler should also have been alive at this time, and aged 60 ish.

I'm assuming that the 1861 census might answer some questions, but any other information or advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance

Liz

Oops

I've just noticed in their 1881 census return, that Whitechapel is in Middlesex. Sorry, I'll try a message in that group instead!

This is where it gets confusing...

Yes, Whitechapel is Middx, BUT the census is arranged on Parliamentary, not County Boundaries. Whitechapel IS in the London census.

Fieldgate St, Whitechapel Rd Rg9/ 271 Fols 60-64 & 90-92.

The only Prince of ? .. Looks like Hebeer? Fol 90 and is the Chapman Family.

Dozens of possibles for Leman Street, Have you a house number?

Thanks

The info I have on the White Hart is 43(126) Leman Street.  Might it have been renumbered at some point?

I understand that the Kisler name, particularly in this spelling is pretty unusual, though I have seen it mistranscribed as Risler!

(I've reread the notes I've been given, and the Prince of Orange connection might have been the mid 1850's - before going to the White Hart, so maybe it was demolished or something?)

Hi
I am trying to track down a GISLER family in Whitechapel about the same time. Originally from Germany, they then moved to Hull, Yorks.

Could they be connected? I know how difficult to read some of these records are!

Hi

That's interesting. I've noticed Kislers in the Hull area, but I'm not aware of any connections.

Jacob was apparently born in Germany - Darmstadt according to the 1871 census (this was a bit of a surprise to us - we thought he had been born in London!)

With his wife and children, he moved from London to Suffolk and back to London - but after that, he remained in London to living memory (only one son survived and married and he also remained in London - the others were all daughters, and most were unmarried). My great uncle - Jacob's grandson noted that Jacob's father and mother were John and Elizabeth (but I have no other evidence for this).

John Kisler was supposedly born in 1768 and died in 1847. Elizabeth was supposedly born in 1800 and died in 1863. We have no knowledge of any children other than Jacob. However, we have noticed that Elizabeth was much younger than John - and wonder whether there might have been an earlier wife - or even half siblings?

I'm assuming that if there is any connection, then it would be via John or hypothetical siblings of Jacob. I haven't been able to trace Jacob any earlier than 1871 yet.

Anything looking familiar?

Couldn't find any Kisler, Kissler, Kizzler or even Gisler in 1851 census indexes for 1851 Bethnal Green, Shoreditch or Whitechapel.

I found a Kisler family in the 1851 St George in the East surname only index
reference HO 107/1547 folio 79
also a Kisser? Ho 107/1549 folio 251

If no-one finds these people for you ask again quoting reference numbers

hi lizziec

Does seem a coincidence having a Whitchapel and Hull connection!!

I haven't done much research on my Gissler. The name cropped up in my research on my great grandmother, Johanne Louise Gesine MEINECKE.

She was born in Bremen (1855) and married a fellow German (Adolf ASSERT in Whitechapel in 1874).
She later moved to Hull, Yorks and married Frederick FROW. Her parents were living in Hull from the time of the 1871 census. But there also was a William GISSLER aged 28 from Bremen (a sailor); his brother Louis aged 10 also from Bremen, living with their grandmother Johanna MEINECKE in Hull. I have assumed, rightly or wrongly, that this Meinecke must be related to my Meinecke family. They are the only Meineckes I could find north of London ! Must be rellated.

I had been unable to find any trace  of my Meineckes in Germany, so started to see what I could find out about Gissler, as they are obviosly related.

It's a wild shot I suppose to think there may be some connection between Gissler and Kissler.

Thanks for the info - the Kisler's in St Georges in the East (the ones you said were in HO 107/1547 folio 79) would be particularly interesting to know more about - since the family and their decendants lived in that area of London later.

I've never seen the Kisler name miswritten as Kisser - but it seems quite a likely variant, and there ought to be both Jacob aged roughly 18 and his mother aged 51 in 1851 out there somewhere, at the least. I probably ought to wait until I know about the possible Kislers before looking at the Kissers.

Thanks very much

Liz
