James Drummond SHIELS/Agnes CAMPBELL
« on: Tuesday 27 February 07 15:02 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the family and ancestors of the above.  James was born abt 1852 and the couple married in Edinburgh on 28 July 1876.  James died in Edinburgh on 12 October 1915.  By trade he was a Lithographer and Photographer.

One of their children, Thomas, was later to become a Photographer, Doctor of Medicine and Member of Parliament for East Edinburgh before becoming Sir Thomas Drummond Shiels.  He was the maternal Grandfather of my wife.

Any information about the family or ancestors of James and Agnes will be most gratefully recieved.

Hi Two Jays

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

It would help people doing any searches for you if you could also include details of James and Agnes's parents' names from their marriage/ death certs. This would help to find them in the early censuses.

Regards.

Monica

Thanks Monica

I believe that James's parents were Thomas Shiels and Euphemia Jupta but don't take this information as gospel.  No dates for either.  No information on Agnes's parents I'm afraid.

Hi 2J's ,

I have found a James Shiels 28 yo and an Agnes Shiels aged 27yo in 1881 census. Living at 15 High School Yards, Edinburg Lady Yesters. They have 2 daughters Mary aged 4 and Euphemia aged 2. The ages would tie up nicely.

Tom
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

I hope you don't mind me intruding on your thread, but I couldn't help it when I read about your  Drummond Shiels men.

I have a very tatty copy of an obituary of my Gt Gt Grandfather's obituary which has a photo taken by Drummond Shiels Edinburgh at the top.

I wondered if you know what happened to any of their work or of anywhere that may have any copies of photos as I would love to see what he really looked like.  What I have is a photocopy of a photocopy of a newspaper cutting from 1923!

We have tried everywhere we can think of to find photos as he was a State Trumpeter for Scotland and Bandmaster  of the Queen's Edinburgh Rifles and conducted numerous concerts in the various parks in Edinburgh.

I know this is probably a question you cannot answer and please excuse my cheek, but it was just worth a try.

I hope you get some good help with your research.  Good luck.

best wishes
Daff

Hi Daffodily

In your search for Drummond Shiel Photographers, have a look at this link. Apart from Thomas there is also a James Drummond Shiels with studios in Edinburgh:

Hi two jays

For verification of James and Agnes's parents, you can look at their death certs. on line at Scotlands' People, the official pay to view BMD site at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This looks a possible for Agnes's death entry:

1910   SHIELS   AGNES       CAMPBELL   56   @ NEWINGTON   EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN   Refs: 685/05 0146

And for James, this one looks likely:

1915   SHIELS   JAMES DRUMMOND    63   @ MORNINGSIDE   EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN   Refs: 685/06 1007

Regards.
