Collingbourne Ducis Families - LOVER
« on: Sunday 25 February 07 15:39 GMT (UK) »
In 1766 John Lover married Sarah or Sally Banning in Milton Lilbourne. After the wedding in Sarah/Sally's village they moved to John residence in Collingbourne Ducis and had 10 children from 1766 to 1786. They were called, John, Elizabeth, John, Mary, Thomas, Ann, Jane, William, Charles and Sarah.
Any help in where they lived in Collingbourne Ducis, for how long, or what they did would be appreciated. I know John was a wheelwright.
Thanks,
Neil.

You may have these already, but here are baptisms from the transcriptions of the parish records (unfortunately no residence info):

John Lover 1766  10 October, son of John and Sarah   (Buried 1766 15 October, infant)
Elizabeth Lover 1767  14 October, daughter of John and Sarah
John Lover 1769  6 September, son of John and Sarah
Mary Lover 1771 25 October, daughter of John and Sarah
Thomas Lover 1774 10 June (14 weeks old), son of John and Sarah
Ann Benning Lover 1776 18 July, daughter of John and Sarah
Jane Lover 1779 26 March (born 26 November), daughter of John and Sarah
William Lover 1781 28 February, son of John and Sarah
Charles Lover 1783 30 September, son of John and Sarah
Sarah Lover 1786 1 October, daughter of John and Sarah

As I said, there's no clues from the transcripts as to where they actually lived.  There were no further baptisms or burials of Lover in Collingbourne Ducis up to 1837.  I couldn't find any marriages of Lover either in Collingbourne Ducis for 1654-1837.  There are no Lover references in the notes kept by Rev John Dryden Hodgson in the late 19th century.

However, in Collingbourne Remembered (Pamela Cogdell, 1994), there's a map of part of the manor in 1777.  It looks like J Lover had property and land on the East Side of High Street, just north of Church Street.    I think this is now 55/56 High Street.  Apparently there is a plaque on the wall which shows J Lover there in 1777; the house was subsequently divided in 1875, and rejoined in 1993.

Also in 1770, it appears John Lover had pew 7 in the North west Quarter of the church.

Nothing about his occupation though.

Send me a Personal Message if you want to follow this up.

JULIAN

A massive thank you for your responses.
I am blown away by how kind, comprehensive and positive you have been in responding to my request.
As a new member to RootsChat, I must say that I am very impressed by everyones caring approach.
Thanks again.

I guess next steps would be to scout the surrounding villages and parishes to see what happened to the family. Clearly at least two ended up at Frenchay. I know one child, Charles, moved to Plymouth. I am struggling to find out what happened to the others?

A trip to Trowbridge may provide the answer, but before 30th April when it closes. Otherwise, I understand it is a case of waiting until 1st November before the records become accessible again at Chippenham.

I have no idea if it is available "new".  I got mine second hand through the net (via Abebooks, If I recall correctly).  Cost me £20 plus p&p, but for 300 pages plus of everything you could know about the village, coffee table book size too, it was worth it.

You might want to do as much as you can to narrow down which Wiltshire records to look at.  It is quite possible of course that they moved from Collingbourne Ducis into Hampshire.  I'd also see if you can find out how the two sisters ended up in Frenchay.   There's an excellent local site on Frenchay and Winterbourne - http://www.frenchaymuseumarchives.co.uk/.

Good luck.

Not your period but may be of interest -- I lived in CD for 25 years fron 1978 at Chestnuts House. Mrs Banning lived next door; widow of former village blacksmith; no doubt a descendent of your Banning.  I carried our a restoration of our ancient house and know every inch of it. From the accounts of the house in "Collingbourne Ducis Remembered" I recognise a number of inaccuracies and incorrect reporting which makes me wary of the remainder of the book.
