Yes, that worried me too Valda - can you be a marine & hence both?

Time to ask on Armed Forces maybe!

Arranroots I'm afraid, a marine is a marine, the royal navy is the navy and the army is something else again. They historically don't mix.
I suspect the 1851 census army family might not have been in the country in 1861 as there are a couple of possibilities for William and Margaret on the 1871 census - both servants in Hampshire, but I can't see anything for them in 1861.

A possible for Margaret's birth

Births Jun 1849
Giles  Margaret    Alverstoke  7 28

Thanks Valda - just wondered if they were barracked (?) together and hence confusion.  Not an area I know anything about!

Hi Listers...

Thank you one and all most sincerely for your "excellent" response......

Correct me if I am wrong....

Sarah Jane 8 is the daughter of William and Anne.... as we know our Sarah Jane is the daughter of John Giles this one is unlikely ?

Sarah Jane 7 of Devonport seems to be the one of interest age 7 when census was taken.. age 8 after the census would give a birth year of 1844 which is what I am looking for....

Sarah Jane Giles Davenport Vol.1039 Page.2 95 regt would seem to be the one I need.....

I would appreciate your opinion on this.....  all this is new to me...

Many thanks for your kindness in helping me....

Sincerely Fingal

Since the father is unknown from the census, unless there is a regimental marriage in the army registers for a Giles in the 95th, the only way to find out whether this Sarah had a father called John is to access her or a known siblings' birth certificate.

This website has the 95th Regiment 1st battalion timeline. It confirms the 95th were not in England at the time of the 1861 census.

Hi Fingal

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten - it is a process of elimination & if we can tie one of these Sarah's to a father called William, we will know she is not yours (unless he uses two names, but we won't got there yet!)

 :D

I wasn't able to do anything useful with the witnesses to the marriage of Sarah Jane.

Just throwing these into the mix, in case we need a marriage for John between 1861 and 1871...

Marriage

Dec q 1862

Ann BUCKLER
John GILES
Elizabeth GLABHAM
Thomas JUSTICE

East Stonehouse 5b 527

(Can't find Ann BUCKLER before this though)
