Hi Fingal

Have you any further info on the family?  Is your info from a marriage cert - how old is Sarah and who were the witnesses?

There is an army family in the area in 1851, but none in 1861 that can be tied in to the details you give.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranboots

Alexander John Corbett married Sarah Jane Giles 1864 at St. Andrew's Plymouth.....

Alexander and Sarah were 20 years old at the time...

The witness's Georgina Pitts surname is hard to read and Henry Walton the first name is hard to read...

Alexander a Bandsman 75th regt gives his residence as Parish of Farnborough Hants his father Sargeant Major Thomas Corbett

Sarah 15 Cornwall street... I assume that address to be in Plymouth

Thank you for your help

Sincerely Fingal

This is a possible - bear in mind that Sarah might not have been at her parents' home the night before the marriage.

1871 census

John GILES H M 52 - beerhouse keeper & naval pensioner - Devon Kingsand?
Ann W M 39 - Alson? Cornwall
Margaret dau U 19 - assistant - Devonport

Address: Nelson's Victory, King Street, Plymouth St Andrew, Devon

You could try www.historicaldirectories.org to look for inn and beerhouse keepers in Plymouth around that time

I think this hangs together, but you will need more documents to prove anything - especially a birth cert for Sarah Jane

Rebecca dau W 34 - dress maker - Devon Kingsand

John son 13 - scholar - Devon Devonport
Margaret dau 9 - do - do
Bessy granddaughter 8 - scholar - do Plymouth
Bessy B granddaughter 7 - do - do Devonport
John grandson 2 - do
John son Widr 38 - R.N. - do Kingsand

Address: no 9, Market St, Stoke Damerel, Devon

Checking back to the 1851 census there were two Sarah J Giles born close together

Sarah J Giles 8 East Stonehouse, Devon
Sarah Jane Giles 7 Devonport, Devon

But only one birth registration which is more likely for the elder, the daughter of William and Ann. As they are both military births, the other registration might be in the army GRO index.

The 1851 census is an army family. The 1861 and 1871 is a Royal Navy man?
