Storie
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 22:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for information on family - Storie - born in Law Village, Lanarkshire.
I have an Isabella Storie - b.1913 in Law Village. Her father was John Storie born in the Edinburgh area. Her mother was Agnes Malcolm. Isabella had ten siblings! No names - sorry! This is the first time my 'tree' has taken me into Scottish Genealogy - so I am at a bit of a loss of where to start!!!!

Hi Kargil

Welcome to Scottish Rootschat  ;)

A good place for you to start would be with the marriage cert. of Isabella's parents. Scottish certs are a minefield of info. From this you will get their ages, occupations, parents' names including mother's maiden names (also whether they were alive/deceased) etc.

From the official pay to view site Scotlands People, where you can access on line their marriage cert, this looks like their entry:

1894   STORIE   JOHN   MALCOLM   AGNES MITCHELL   DALZIEL   /LANARK   639/00 0144

Can I suggest you have a look at these three links on RootsChat which will explain what is available for you to research the family and how to go about it:

Kargill..and B-I-L!

Agnes's surname is showing as Malcolm on the index. Mitchell would be her second name (Agnes Mitchell Malcolm). Quite common to use family surnames as middle names for children.

There is one birth entry coming up on SP:

1875   MALCOLM   AGNES MITCHELL   F   HAMILTON   /LANARK   647/00 0010

Could well be your Agnes's, the only one coming up with Mitchell as a middle name. Be aware though that sometimes although middle names were used, the birth may not have been registered to include it. Hopefully you can verify it with parents' names from Agnes's marriage cert.

.....hate to break the news ::)

This Agnes's birth, actually born end of Dec. 1874 but registered early 1875, looks to probably have been illegitimate going by the birth details showing on IGI:

AGNES MITCHELL MALCOLM  Birth: 11 DEC 1874  Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
Parents: Mother: JANE MALCOLM

No father's name showing on the birth registration in would appear. I would certainly start with the marriage cert. for verifaction of details.

I'd hold off until we verify....pleeease!

I've had a look at the marriage in 1894. Agnes is showing as much older, 34. There is no father's name showing on the cert though.... Mother Janet (Jane) looks to have married a Joseph Davidson according to the entry. There's something written after mother Jane's name which is hard to make out: xxxx daughter?

There is this marriage showing for a Jane Malcolm to a Joseph Davidson which could fit:

1881   DAVIDSON   JOSEPH   MALCOLM   JANE   DALZIEL   /LANARK   639/00 0048

Regards.

Monica

In Scotland, some first names are interchangeable - Janet/Jane/Jean/Jessie for example. Have a look at this link www.whatsinaname.net/
