Orby Chapel
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 09:59 GMT (UK) »
There is an old chapel, now a  residence, in Orby. It is on the left hand side of the road when travelling towards Ingoldmells.

Can anyone tell me the denomination of the chapel please?

Thanks.

George.

Hi George
There is a picture on this website about a Baptist Chapel in a field near Orby. Is this the one you are talking about.

Hello Ricky,

Thanks for the suggestion. It is difficult to compare the chapel in your link with the attached photograph, but on balance, I don't think that they are the same building. My photograph shows the chapel to be just off the road rather than in a field as described in the link.
Hopefully someone else may be able to identify the chapel.

Thanks again.
George.

George

Doesn't look like Monksthorpe Baptist to me - I have a photo of this on my Lincolnshire churches website

http://groups.msn.com/EnglishChurchPhotographs/yetmorelincolnshirechurches.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=877

1905 Kelly's Directory states that there was a Wesleyan chapel built in 1837 seating 80 persons whilst Kelly's 1882 Directory states that the Primitive Methodists have a chapel here.

1872 White's Directory states that both the Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist have a chapel here.

1930 Kelly's Directory states that a new Wesleyan Methodist chapel built in 1924 at a cost of £1,400 will seat 120 people.

Hope this helps.

Looking at Orby on www.old-maps.co.uk there appears to be a "Meth Chapel Wes" marked as well as the church.  Can you spot the location of your chapel on the map?

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the link to the map, but the Methodist Chapel appears to be on the wrong side of the road. I will keep looking.
George.
