Tracing from the 1940s onwards...
« on: Friday 23 February 07 16:07 GMT (UK) »
I have traced a relative born in the 1920s to an address in California when they were an informant on the death certificate of their father in the 1940s. What resources can I use to trace that person from then to now (preferably using the internet as I am UK based). Any suggestions gratefully received.
Edwards, Grieve, Talbert in Angus and Kincardineshire; Allan, Dundas, Hacket, Milne, Reid in Aberdeen and Orkney; Brock in Thurso and Aberdeen; Rennie in Aberdeenshire to name but a few...

Have you tried SSDI (Social Security Death Index) on LDS site (www.familysearch.org)?
I use a index on a website called peoplefinder to look for living people in U.S. (not sure of exact address but if you can't find it in Google let me know). You can put in first name, last name, middle inital, state, etc. and what comes up is age, state (and sometime city), connected people. Youn can't be 100% certain of results but it usually gives a location to search further.
As you probably know, unusual names are a big help.
If the person died in California there are some death indexes online. Think also bride's marriage index.
If you don't want to post details and want more help, send pm and I'll see what other sources come to mind.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the replies so far. There is certainly some food for thought there and a few new avenues for me to explore. The last trace I have of the person I am interested in is in Venice, California. I have been in touch with a Family History Group in Los Angeles who were very helpful. I really appreciate all your comments and I will let you know how I get on.

If you could post or PM a name (or names), I could try looking for it for you in a few Southern California resources.

Please do not post the details of living people, or people who might still be alive, in order to prevent identity theft and other abuses.

Thanks
