Emigrated 1911-1926 to Brisbane - Any Help Appreciated
« on: Friday 23 February 07 10:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, am wondering if anyone can help.
George Edward Self (born England 03/03/1884) and his wife Lucy emigrated to Brisbane sometime between the end of 1911 and 1926.  They got married in Islington, London in September 1911 (Lucy's maiden name was Sims).  I know they were in Brisbane in 1926 as they were sponsors for another member of the family who emigrated at the end of 1926.  That's the only trace I have of them until George Edward joined the Australian Army for WWII.
Any help/advice would be appreciated!
Many thanks
Linda

Hi Linda,
I'm going to the archives probably this week and would be happy to check the immigration indexes for your Self family.

Oh Ruskie thanks so much, that would be absolutely brilliant!  I have the emigration records for my Great Great Uncle and Aunt who emigrated in 1926 -  Lucy E Self is noted as being First Cousin to my Great Great Aunt who's maiden name was Sims.  George Edward apparently worked for the Water and Sewage Board in 1926.
Cheers!

Hi
Found a Mr Self (38 years) and Mrs Self (34 years) 2 girls 6 and 14 years and a boy 10 years coming to Australia  in March 1913 on the Moldavia - Port N, Fiche 364 Page 002.  No christian names mentioned.

Could be some of yours.  Have you looked up Georges World War II records on the net.  www.naa.gov.au  some times they have a digital copy you can read.

Mega Buckets of Good luck Ruskie!!!

Sabrina, have looked at the link you sent me, that's the link where I found his army details but couldn't see a digital copy on line.  I don't think the 38 year old is mine, George Edward was born in 1884 so he would have only been 29 in 1913, but many thanks for taking the time to look for me!

One thing I have managed to find out is that there is a birth of a Richard G Self in June-September 1913, mother's maiden name was Sims, odds are that it is related to my George and Lucy, which means they were still in England in late 1913!

Cheers!

Hi Linda,

I have found some information about your Self family.

SELF
George Edward age 48 cleaner C of E
Lucy Eleanor 38
Philip J 13
Richard George 12
Rosa Lucy Winifred 2

Ship: SS Oronsay
sailed 20-2-26
arrived 5-4-26

(I took note of some other Self immigrations, all in the early 1880's, if you'd like those too - just let me know?)

In additon there was a dossier (on film) about your family which looks as though it is a booklet of 6 pages which included:
1. Nominated Assisted Passages to Qld front page
2. application form
3. fees page and applicant details
4. page for "the immigration officer to fill in carefully" - not much on this
5. ID page plus photographs
6. particulars of children under 16 (no additonal information)

I made photocopies of the most interesting pages - the application page (which gives the families London address etc etc), and the ID page. The copies came out quite dark I'm afraid. If you message me privately with your postal address, I will send them to you.

Quite a good result overall.
PS Did you know George was in the Boer war?
