Hello all,

My maternal grandmother was a Portas, and I'm stuck around 1790, with the marriage of Thomas Portas or Portus and Francis Tuplin in Keelby.( I think this may have been Frances' second marriage...maybe Frances Swallow).

Since most Portas's (a) couldn't spell their name and (b) insisted on calling their male offspring Thomas or William, I did a spreadsheet of all spellings that I could find in IGI and the various N Lincs deaneries marriage records --about 400, with loose family groupings.

This thread at least takes the 1766 Thomas off my shortlist of possible ancestors - thanks.

Happy to share my data with anyone.

LINCOLNSHIRE: Sergeant, Dent, Watts, Fussey, Portas, Middleton, Bullivant, Howson, Lingard, Arliss, Laceby, Holtby, Lamb, Host, Stark, Hicks, Cuthbert, West. DEVON: Parkhouse, Brace, Mullins, Luxton,Cook ,Nicholls, Ley

I am still stuck on my Portas line.  A bit of a road block. My branch ended up marrying into the Hancock Family of Spilsby and then the Nixon family to immigrate to the US in 1907.  So I am not sure i can be of much help to either of you.

Funny, you are right be all male off spring seem to be William or Thomas.  Not a very inventive family. ;D

I have just discovered this thread, and am puzzled about Ann, the natural daughter of Thomas PORTAS, wife of Andrew LOCKING. The only Ann, wife of Andrew in my LOCKING One Name Study was indeed illegitimate, but I have her as Ann SANDS, who married Andrew Locking in 1803. Did the Will of Thomas TYSON mention where his sister was living? Also, my Ann died "aged 72" in 1840, which would give her a birthdate of 1768 - a bit early to be the daughter of Thomas!
Any further clues gratefully received.
Cheers,
Liz

This was all that the will stated. I did not go much further with siblings as I am intersted in the Tyson tie so far.  Have not done much on Portas.  I have not found a birth of Thomas's sister yet.

If Thomas Portas was born 1766, then he was only 14 when his son Thomas Tyson was born! This would certainly explain why he and Bridget didn't get married, of course.
Do you have a burial for Thomas Portas? Does it mention his age at death, do you know?
Cheers,
Liz

His baptism date was 8 Apr 1766, Belchford.  son of William and Mary Portas.  His will was executed in June 1812 so I would assume he died that month.  I have not gotten his burial record.  Not sure how to get it. A kind cousin in England helped me at the archives and found the information for me on the family.  Traded things I had for his help at the Lincolnshire Archives. (I  live accross the pond)

Thanks very much for this. I'll have to have a root round and see if I can dig up anything further!

Hi,
I am interested in this thread since there is a very strong possibility this Thomas PORTAS married to Bridgett TYSON is in my family. I have a William PORTAS married Mary [possibly WRIGHT - 1729 Sixhills, Lincs]. I have been working on my direct line so I haven't at this point, gotten to verify these findings on my collateral line. Right now, most of my information I received from sources' bits and pieces.

Any further information on this Thomas is greatly appreciated since I highly suspect he is the grandson of my 6x great grandfather. I would love to share thoughts and information I have.

"nutkin" the transcript of the will was great help.... this helps make sense of my information.

please contact me off line. Put Thomas PORTAS in the subject so I don't delete it accidentally.

Karen
