PORTAS/PORTER and TYSON Families

I am looking for more info on the following family. 
Thomas Tyson bapt December 3, 1780 in Spilsby, the son of Thomas Porter and Bridget Tyson.  He died November 18, 1820 in Skendleby.

Thomas Porter/Portas was bapt on April 8, 1766 in Belchford, the son of William Portas and Mary .  Thomas Porter/Portas was married to Bridget Tyson on May 28, 1787 on Willoughby.  (only 7 years after their son Thomas Tyson was born.  Oops ). Thomas was a cordwainer in Mablethorpe.  His will was noted June 19, 1812.

Bridget Tyson may have been the daughter of Gilbert Tyson who was bapt February 22, 1738 in Saltfleetby St Clement the son of Arthur Tyson.  Gilbert Tyson was a witness of the marriage of Bridget and Thomas Porter. 

I have ordered the will of Thomas Portas and Thomas Tyson and waiting patiently.  Wondered if there are others looking into the family.- Kristin

Received copies of the wills of Thomas Portas and Thomas Tyson.  Intersting to read.  Thomas Portas has a brother William Portas who is mentioned in the document.  Thomas Tyson has a sister Ann Tyson who was also the natural child of Thomas Portas.

Wonder if there are any other Portas's and Tyson's out there!

As far as I know, my Porteous family hails from Yorkshire (Dunnington and Elvington, both near York). In my research, I have come across a variety of spellings including, but not restricted to Portas, Portes, Portus, Portice, Porteus and Portis. In the 1861 census of Ontario, Canada, our name has the latter spelling, providing a clue as to its pronunciation at that time.

I suspect that the Porteous/Portas families in both Lincolnshire and Yorkshire may be related, and am interested in instances of the surname in both jurisdictions.

By the way, my Dunnington-born ggg-grandfather, George Porteus (1789-?), is identified as the son of William Portas (confusing, all of those spellings).

Welcome to the site.  Everyone is friendly and willing to help!  You are probably correct in the connection between the two groups.  I listed what I know so far.  Below is a transcription I did of The Will of Thomas Portas (1766-1812) from Mablethorpe, Linc.  He had the following siblings : Elizabeth , bapt 1767 Belchford, William, bapt 1780, Sarah bapt 1777, Ann bapt 1771 and John.  All born in Belchford to William Portas and Mary?.

Last Will of Thomas Portas, Mablethorpe April 12, 1811. 
Executor Thomas Tyson, June 19. 1812

This is the last will and testament of me Thomas Portas of Mablethorpe in the County of Lincoln farmer. First I charge all and every my lands- tenements and Heretitaments situate lying and being in Mablethorpe or elsewhere in the county of Lincoln and also all and singular my personal estate of what nature or kind soever with the payment of my just debts legacies and funeral expenses and one annuity and charged and changeable therewith. I give and devise all and every of my cottage lands tenements and heretaments to my natural son Thomas Tyson of Skendleby in the said county cordwainer for and during the term of the natural life of my dear wife Bridget Portas and from and after her decease I give devise and bequeath all my said cottage lands tenements and hereditaments to and amongst my grandchildren the sons and daughters of my natural son Thomas Tyson and my natural daughter Ann the wife of Andrew Locking and to their heirs and assigns for ever to take or tenants in common and not as joint tenants.  Also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Bridget Portas one annuity or yearly sum of ten pounds and eight shillings for and during the term of her natural life to be paid to her by my executor herein after named and it is my will and mind and I do hereby order and direct that the said annuity be paid to my said wife weekly and every week at the rate of ten shillings per week also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Bridget all my household furniture plate and linen for her own use and benefit absolutely forever. Also I give and bequeath unto my natural daughter Ann the wife of Andrew Locking the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid to her by my executor herein named the expiration of six calendar months next after my decease. Also I give and bequeath to my brother John Portas the sum of twenty pounds to be paid to him by my executor hereinafter named at the expiration of six calendar months next after my decease.  Also I give and bequeath unto my brother William Portas the sum of twenty pounds to be paid to him by my executor hereinafter named at the expiration of six calendar months next after my decease. And also all the rest and residue of my ready money and securities for money goods chattels stock effects and personal estate of what nature and administers and I do constute and appoint my said son Thomas Tyson full and sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made in witness. whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of April in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven.

Thanks for taking the trouble to transcribe and post Thomas Portas' will.

I have my Port*s origins wrapped up on this side of the Atlantic (Canada, from the 1840s on), but I have a long way to go with the earlier UK history of my family. There is a Porteous Gathering in Edinburgh in September, 2005, so I'm hoping to make some inroads at that time.

I guess you've probably already got this but, from the IGI, there is a record of the marriage of William PORTAS and Mary TYSON at South Willingham, Lincolnshire on December 24, 1801.

Is this yet another link between the same two families mentioned in Nutkin's original posting? Is this William (baptised 1780), brother of Thomas, marrying Bridget's sister?

It seems to be in the same general area of Lincolnshire as the places you mention (East Lindsey district).

South Willingham is about twenty miles west of Mablethorpe, and eighteeen miles or so north-west of Skendleby.

Strangely, there is a record of a later Portus family in Ulceby (only a stone's throw from Skendleby) - Robert Portus (1861-1925).

There may be no connection, but from the migration point of view, there appears to be a small cluster of Portas/Portus around here.

William Portass married to Emily Brown nee Pigott
on 8 October 1872 at Launceston, Tasmania. (as per Tasmanian Index)

William was born about 1836 at North Coates Linc.
Parents John Portass and Sarah Moore (as per
death certificate)

William Portass died 10 January 1916

I'm wondering if the Portass from Australia could be connected to your English Portas.
