Can anyone help. re.Steel
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 01:39 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for relatives of my Grandmother's brother Stewart Steel b.1884c in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
According to, still living, elderly relative, he emmigrated to, Vancouver, Canada about 1905.
I have found, his possible death, 28/12/1973. Fraser Cemetary, New Westminster. Age 89
Was told he married late in life.
Can anyone help?

Hi, skye!

Have you checked the 1911 census transcription online at Automated Genealogy:

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Keep in mind that the transcription is not yet complete (it is being done by volunteers).

Since you have a date of death and the name of the cemetery, I would contact the cemetery and ask for any information they have on him and also ask who else is buried with him.  They might have his wife's name, etc.

I don't know if you have this or not, but there are funeral records listed for Bowell Funeral home. Some Steel's are mentioned, and they list parents names.

If you check out Ancestors on Board, you can see when he arrived.
http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

It looks as though he could have arrived in 1911.

You can then check original manifests (for free) at the National Archives - Canada site. (they are not transcribed)

Skye,

Have you been able to learn anything at all?

I see the death record is available via the British Columbia Vital Statistics site:

http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm

If the cemetery hasn't been able to help you, and the archive doesn't have a copy of his obituary, it might be worthwhile to order his death record since it should list his wife's name and the name of the informant (which might be a family a member).

Regards,
Josephine

Dear Josephine,
Thank you again for your help. The death record as given on BC vital statistics was what first started me on my search though, I have to admit I can't recall how I first came by it.
I pursued the idea of getting a copy of his dc. but have to admit I found the process a bit confusing. Will study it again .
Have e-mailed New Westminster but  no reply yet.
Many thanks. Will keep on trying.
Skye

Skye,

I see what you mean.

You could email the BC Archives and ask how much they charge for a plain paper copy:

access@www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca

Give them the following info:

---------

Call Number: 1973-09-018561 / Roll b13329
  (Deaths (1872-1986))

Vital Event Death Registration

Name:     Stewart Steel
Event Date:     1973 12 28 (Yr/Mo/Day)
Age:            89
Gender:         male
Event Place:    New Westminster
Reg. Number:    1973-09-018561
B.C. Archives Microfilm Number:  B13329
GSU Microfilm Number: 2050284

---------

I wonder if there is someone at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness who could look up his obituary, and possibly even his death record, for you:
