Thomas was also my gg grandfather, and I seem to be on a similar quest to you to trace the family history. Could you get in touch to see if we have information useful to each other.

On the "Stockport" entry - not aware that Thomas ever lived there, not out Thomas anyway, there were other Burtonshaw's around the Macclesfield area involved in hatting, which was also an industry in Stockport, so that Thomas may be connected to that.

There is a story in the family that Arthur Victor, one of Thomas's son's completed the family many many years ago - well that's the story from my father [Donald] (and originally from his father- William Thomas, Arthur's nephew and Thomas's grandson). I would like to get in touch with any descendants of Arthur to see if (a) it was true and (b) if so who has it!! - Would save us all a lot of effort!

In the burial records for St George's Church in Doncaster ... there are no Burtonshaws .. but 27 entries do show for the name Birkinshaw .. most down as the trades of Cordwainer & Inholder.
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

Hello Jeremy

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Got stuck with Thomas and left him for other things. Since your message have looked again at my Burtonshaw family to tidy it up.
Arthur Burtonshaw was my great grandfather, his eldest daughter Elizabeth Marjorie (always called Madge) was my grandmother. I have never heard of any family tree done by Arthur or anyone else. Have traced Thomas through his gas industry work, usually through the census returns and the places that his children were born, including a Coroner's report on the death of his son in law in a gas explosion at Bloxham (Oxon).

Will look again at the census return of him with the Jarvis family - cannot trace his parents, have you any ideas?

Thanks for the response - I am interested in any documentation you have which adds interest to the "Burtonshaw" history. the direct email is mydaughtershopstoomuch@hotmail.com .

I have a marriage record for William from FreeReg which also provided a baptism record for Thomas. William is listed as a blacksmith (as are a number of Burtonshaws at that time in Axholme) - family trade perhaps. From that it is possible to place Williams wife as Sarah Till, Further digging shows that her parents were Thomas Till & Elizabeth Shoers (not sure about the surname) Sarah had a sister Mary, Mary married Joseph Jarvis, which brings us to the 1841 census with all 3 living in Doncaster. - took me months to figure that one out.

Don't know why though, but it looks like William is living on his own at that time. I am working on the basis that something happened to Sarah in childbirth in 1835 but can not find any records to substantiate. On the other hand maybe she just didn't want to be with an older bloke!

I am looking for something to document Williams birth, The census suggests it is 1791, but that census seems to have had a lot of rounding to the nearest 5 years, in which case it could be earlier. There is a William b 1787 (in Haxey) who could be a candidate.

At some point I will have to get over to St Martin's in Owston to survey the gravestones and to the Lincolnshire archives.

My father was quite definite with the information on Arthur, so it may be worth pursuing, there is a chance that a family tree is stuck in some ones loft somewhere!
Hope this is of use

Slight correction to what I thought, William Burtonshaw (Blacksmith Owston Ferry) was Thomas's Grandfather (I now have a copy of his will), William Snr, lists three Children. Abraham Mason Burtonshaw, Eliza Mason Burtonshaw and William Mason Burtonshaw. The will also lists grandson Thomas by his deceased son William Mason Burtonshaw. Looks like William M married Sarah Till and the child was Thomas, but William died somewhere between 1835 and 1840.
