Where was Thomas Burtonshaw born?
« on: Wednesday 21 February 07 20:05 GMT (UK) »
I have 2 problems with my g-g-grandfather Thomas Burtonshaw
Think he was born around 1836/37 as 25 in 1861 census and stays consistent throughout. In 1861 census he gives Ouston Lincs, 1881 he gives Owston Ferry Lincs, 1891 it's Stockport Lancashire and 1901 it's Stockport Cheshire. His father was William Burtonshaw, musical instrument maker. Can't seem to pin down a William and Thomas in 1841 or 51 as father and son.

The other problem is I can't find Thomas and wife Mary in 1871.
By this time they had the following children: Alice Ada; William; Emily; Thomas. Leila was born 1870 in London area and Laura 1872 in Leavesden Herts. Thought they would have been in one of these places but can't find them.
Any ideas very welcome, Thomas is driving me mad!

Jo,

I can solve the Stockport bit---it's the same place but in two counties. Bartholomew's 1950s Gazetteer says "Cheshire AND Lancashire".

Similarly Ouston and Owston Ferry are probably the same place. Mr. Bartholomew is not authoritative, but there is only one Owston (either spelling) in Lincs, and that's Owston Ferry. In my experience, census enumerators could be pretty hopeless when it came to "foreign" placenames.

At least that reduces the places to look by half  :)

Hi Jo

In 1871 I think you will find them at the following reference

St John Westminster RG10/124 Folio 65 Page 73

I have assumed that you have access to the censuses but if you do not and you need the full details posting please let us know

Hello again Jo

In 1841 I think Thomas is with his Uncle and Aunt, Joseph and Ellen Jarvis, at reference Doncaster HO107/1330/11 Folio 5 Page 5. This shows his birth place as Lincolnshire.

In 1851 he is still with them at reference Doncaster HO107/2348 Folio 262 Page 17. This shows his birth place as Ferry, Lincolnshire.

These tie in with his 1861 entry in Doncaster when he is first shown working in the gas industry.

Neither entry is any help in locating his father but I think that this could very well be your Thomas.

What do you think ?

Thanks to you both. :)
I think I can knock Stockport on the head, perhaps he thought it sounded a better place to originate from. There is an Owston near Doncaster but think I'll have to go for the Lincs Owston Ferry because of the census entry
I think DS has the the right Thomas in 41 & 51 although the women appear to be different. In 1841 it looks like Mary (maybe Joseph's sister?) and in 1851 Ellen. Can't find the connection between the 2 families yet.

I presume the 1871 census Westminster is in London. I'm using commercial internet site to find the census entries and despite several attempts I cannot find this entry so would be grateful for any info you have

Many thanks
Jo

Jo

Try searching for them with the surname Burtinshan.

If that does not work I will post the details for you

Lelia Burtinshan 1870 might be the best !

I think I can knock Stockport on the head,

Jo

On the 1841 census there are a few Burtonshaws in Stockport who may be connected somehow.

Thanks DS, have just managed to find the entry, it took 2 attempts and thank you for your copy of the info. I've looked into many Burtonshaws in Cheshire and Yorks/Lincs but think it maybe the Yorkshire side of the country. Loads of Jarves/Jarvis births around the same area in Lincs, must presume Thomas's parents died, will keep at it!
