Duplicate birth entries
« on: Monday 19 February 07 20:38 GMT (UK) »
Just uncovered a bit of a puzzle where an infant birth is registered at 2 registrar offices on same day (i.e. Forfar & Govan, Glasgow).  Same informant , parents, etc

Child in question is Alison Hall Cowan b.12 May 1875 daughter of Thomas Cowan and Susan Spankie.

Any clues anyone?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

That was quite commonplace for a good many years, where the child was born away from home, in a different registration district. The address section will probably show the birthplace and the usual residence address. In the last column, one will probably say transcribed from... and make reference to the original certificate. The first certificate should be from the registration district of the birth. The transcribed one should be from the registration district of the usual residence.

The transcription should show the same birth date, but the date of transcription in the last column is usually a day or so later, presumably when they got home.
