Thank you for looking Brian
I had found the wills, which is where I got the fact that George had a brother called John, Joseph is also a brother and James the father. James left the nursery business to sons James jr, George and Robert. Joseph, John and sisters were left all other properties, monies and goods between them. So if that was Hindon John he would have been well provided for.

There is another article from the Salisbury Journal 2 Apr 1827 in which a Thos. Cuthbert Williams of Hindon announces that he is taking over the business of J. Fairbairn. The shop in Shaftesbury obviously continued under the Fairbairn name for a while.

I'll have to attack this from the London end I think.

Thanks again
Sue

Thomas Harrison married Susannah Mitchell 17 Mar 1793 East Knoyle. Susannah was previously married to James Mitchell and her maiden name was Tily. Her daughter by her first marriage was Susan(na) Tily Mitchell who married John Fairbairn.
Why Thomas handed the Lamb Inn over to John I don't know. Was he ill or just getting too old? I imagine he would have been in his sixties by then. And how did John manage to get in such a financial mess in such a short time! Perhaps he drank the profits.

By 1841 there don't seem to be any of them left. Either John left the country or he died somewhere other than Hindon.

Very glad to have bumped into this thread.  I am hitting a wall with John Fairbairn. I believe him to be the son of John James Fairburn b 1751 surrey, London (seedsmen of Clapham) and Elizabeth Ashenden born 1758 London.  John and Elizabeth had James Edward B 1783, (married Mary Wenham) then our John Fairbairn B 1787 in Clapham Surrey, London. then Elizabeth 1790, Clapham, then Robert Thomas 1791 Clapham. and George 1794 and Joseph 1802 all born Clapham Surrey.  All the sons were involved in the nursery, seedsman business that John James built. Some of their children also went into the business.  What I know about John James Snr is  James Fairbairn Snr, owned a nursery business in Clapham with a seedsmans shop on the high street and he was well respected for his knowledge and plant breeding experience.  His sons James Jnr, George and Joseph worked for the family business and it passed down to include some of his grandchildren.  Son Robert also was a gardener, and its seems almost certain that son John had a nurseryman's business in Shaftesbury Dorset. . Son Georges son Edward Frederick moved up to Carlisle where he had a his own successfull nurseryman's business which too pass down through his sons.  There is a possible link with John Fairbairn Curator of the Physic Garden in Chelsea, with a probably wife being Jane Fairbone of the Botanic Gardens, married in 1815 Kelso Roxbourghshire. 1764 of Jane white and John Fairbairn.   What I am struggling with is John Fairbairn, obviously moved out to Hindon, Wiltshire, and it would seem married a Susannah (Susanna) Mitchel or Michel, in 1797 in Hindon but I can't find a burial for her or death date. I have records for their children, being Elizabeth Shergold (probably god child of a John Shergold Yeoman of Hindon, Or a Richard Shergold who is mentioned in bankruptcy papers as an administrator for John's possible brother in law Thomas Harrison) 1813. James 1819, Ann 1821, John 1822, Sarah Lamb Fairbairn (probably god child of Mr Lamb also a local notable) and a Susan June 1825 but died 31st Dec 1825.  But I also have an article from the Wiltshire and Salisbury journal date October 1825  mentioned about  ((before death of baby Susan in Dec 1825) stating that a Thomas Harrison, handed over the running of the Lamb Inn Hindon to his SON IN LAW J. Fairbairn Seedsman and Nursery men,  But I CAN"T FIND a wedding certificate for a probably bride being daughter Elizabeth Sussanah Harrison to substantiate this article.  And therefore I am having trouble working out where 1st wife Susanna Michel went to, and if indeed baby Susan born 1825 was her's or Elizabeth Harrisons.  Does anyone have any information on a possible wedding of Elizabeth Sussanah Harrison to John Fairbairn circa 1824? or info on Susanna Michel burial?  As an aside Elizabeth Harrisons Father was a freemason with the Innocence and Morality Lodge in Hindon that met at the Lamb Inn, and so was John Fairbairn initiated 1813 into the lodge, along with brothers in Law Thomas Harrison and Johnathan Folliot.  Also notable is that Thomas Harrison married a Susannah Mitchel, but there may be issues with the spelling and the ages make them different.  Does anyone have any information on where John Fairbairn was buried? I have bankruptcy in 1827 and I have article seeing him in Shaftesbury Dorset seedsman, in 1828 and 1830 I am happy to share lineage information with John James Fairbairn senior as his parents also seem illusive to pin down.  Many thanks and happy to share by return Samantha.

Hi Samantha

John Fairbairn's relationship to Thomas Harrison is as a step son-in-law rather than simple son-in-law.

JAMES MITCHELL m. SUKEY TILY 06 April 1784 East Knoyle
Daughter SUSAN TILY MITCHELL baptised 25 Apr 1790 Hindon

(widow) SUSANNAH MITCHELL m THOMAS HARRISON  (bondsman RICHARD SHERGOLD)
so SUSAN(NAH) TILY MITCHELL was Thomas Harrison's step daughter

I don't have any record of JAMES FAIRBAIRN who married ELIZABETH ASHENDEN as being JOHN JAMES. I would be interested to know where that came from. If you send me a personal message with your email address I would be happy to share further information I have re JOHN FAIRBAIRN and family with you.

Thank you so much Sue, very kind of you to reply, that one had been driving me made for days.  Well it would seem we are distant cousins.  My 4th GGrandfather Henry Muskett (book seller ) was married to Euphan Fairbairn the sister of James, Hindon John, Robert, George (your 3rd GG) and Joseph, and sister ELizabeth.
Your George (3rd GG) Married Susannah Musket (my 5th Great Aunt) who was the sister of Henry Muskett above. So brother and sister Musket married the brother and sister Fairbairn counterparts. (that gave me a headache for a few days!!)
I have a full house on all the children and Musket siblings etc etc, if you need any information there.

So we have muskets and fairbairns in common a double wammy!

I go back 2 more gens with Halls and Musketts but then it stops for me there.

As for the Fairbairn I can't remember for the life of me, where I got the middle name James from I can do some digging and come back to you.  As far as his parent go, perhaps we could share information as I have hit a brick wall past James and Elizabeth Ashenden on both their sides really, a few stabs in the dark but nothing conclusive.

Great to connect, how to I private message you my email address?
All the best and thank you again,

PS Did we find anything out about the death date/place of John Fairburn of Hindon?

Hi Samantha

It sounds like you have got about as far back as I have on the FAIRBAIRN and MUSKETT lines as I have. I can't remember how far back I got on the HALL side, not very I think.

I do know what happened to Hindon John (that is what I have always called him too as I have never been able to conclusively prove he is James' son) although it puzzled me for a very long time that I couldn't find a record of him in censuses or of his death on GRO post 1837 or burial pre 1837. Eventually I found a very sad newspaper article which told of his suicide in September 1830 at Shaftesbury. Hence no burial record.

I can email you a copy later and we can exchange gaps in our knowledge.

If you click on "MY MESSAGES" in the brown strip along the top of the page it gives you the option to send a message. If you have any problem let me know but I will be away for the weekend.
