Wilts PR look up please
« on: Monday 19 February 07 11:06 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a burial for JOHN FAIRBAIRN and a remarriage/burial for his wife SUSAN
Known details
Marriage to Susan Mitchell 03 FEB 1812 EAST KNOYLE. John given as of St. Margaret, Marylebone. Susan of Hindon.

Children (Eliza Shergold, Ann, Sarah Lumb and James) all christened at HINDON 1814-1823

He took over the Lamb Inn at Hindon in 1825 and was declared bankrupt in 1827.

The 1830 directory for Shaftesbury, Dorset lists Jno Fairbairn as a nurseryman/seedsman in the High Street, but in 1827 he had handed the business on to a Hindon man.

I cannot find any record of him after 1827. Did he die in Hindon or nearby?

Thanks for your help
Sue

Well that's that's two more children I didn't know about and at least I know why I can't find Susan in 1841.
I wonder what did happen to John?

Thanks very much for your help Brian.

Hi,
Do you live in the above area?   I'm not far from East Knoyle & would be happy to look around the grave yard.
Also get a photo of 'The Lamb' Hindon

Hi Alison
I'm not that far from East Knoyle myself and I've actually been to Hindon and looked round the churchyard (not many legible stones) and taken a photo of The Lamb!
But thank you very much for your kind offer. I haven't looked around East Knoyle as someone had looked at East Knoyle parish records for me and hadn't found any baptisms or burials there.
I don't know why Brian didn't find Hindon baptisms for Ann, Sarah or James. Although James is the only one I can find on the censuses so perhaps all the rest died before 1841. But where and when will remain a mystery for now.

Kind regards
Sue

Hi Sue,
I am sorry for the confusion, but I assumed you knew about the baptisms, so I only included the children you never mentioned !
I only included Elizabeth because of a possible death in 1821

Baptisms:

Dau of John (occupation nurseryman) and Susannah
Baptised at Hindon, WIL
7th Sep 1823
------------------------------------------------------------------
Ann FAIRBAIRN

Baptised at Hindon, WIL
23rd Jan 1822
------------------------------------------------------------------
James FAIRBAIRN
Son of John (occupation nurseryman) and Susanna
Baptised at Hindon, WIL
23rd Jan 1822

Hi Brian
My fault, I should have said that I had those names from the IGI (hence Eliza not Elizabeth) but didn't have any confirmation from parish records. My main concern is to try and find out who John was.

My 3xgreat-grandfather George came from a family of Fairbairn nurserymen and seedsmen in Clapham and to find another one on my doorstep who originated from London just has to be sorted out.

James is the only Hindon Fairbairn I can fin from 1841 onwards. He appears in Middlesex and became an auctioneer and surveyor.

Thanks for filling in the other baptisms for me.

I have now discovered that George did have a brother called John, so now I am even more keen to trace him. I have not seen the parish register entry for his marriage to Susan, the info I have came from Pallots and the IGI. Do you think that you could look that up for me and see if there are any other details that might help.
(My John was left some money in his father's will in 1829 - I wonder if Hindon John suddenly became solvent again.)

Thanks
Sue

I can find two wills for the Fairbairns on this site:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

Will of James Fairbairn, Nursery and Seedsman of Clapham , Surrey   22nd August 1829   PROB 11/1759

Will of Joseph Fairbairn, Nursery and Seedsman of Clapham , Surrey   11th May 1854   PROB 11/2191

LAMB INN, HINDON, WILTS. 1825
THOMAS HARRISON begs leave, most respectfully to return his sincere thanks to the Nobility, Gentry, and the Public in general, for the liberal patronage and support which they have afforded him during the many years that he has kept the above Inn; and he takes this opportunity of informing them, that he has declined business in favour of his Son-in-Law, Mr.JOHN FAIRBAIRN, whom he recommends to their notice, feeling confident that he will use every exertion to give general satisfaction.
JOHN FAIRBAIRN, having succeeded Mr.HARRISON in the above Inn, takes the liberty of soliciting most respectfully a continuance of the kind patronage which has been so many years conferred on his Father-in-Law; and he begs to assure the public, that no exertions shall be wanting on his part to secure to the LAMB INN a continuance of the character for comfort and good accommodation which it has always hitherto maintained.- Families may depend on finding good and well-aired Beds, genuine Wines and Spirits, Horses and Carriages of the best description, and every exertion on the part of J .FAIRBAIRN and his servants to render their accommodation as comfortable as at any Inn on the Road.
N.B.-The NURSERY and SEED BUSINESS will be continued by J. Fairbairn, in all its branches, as usual.

I am unable to find anything else on John Fairbairn, I'm Sorry
