I Searched the 1851 index and could not find this record. These are the matches it came up with for me.

Hi Ben,

I found I couldn't access the site you quoted (ps: if you add http:// at the front, the address automatically becomes a link) so I downloaded the Kent 2% sample from this site: http://ftp.cac.psu.edu/pub/genealogy/text/census/ukc/INDEX.html

the entry reads:

@Kent -M Miscellaneous Institutions
#1851
:
Z/93/  (= start of household)
J/DONALD J M/MACLEOD/COMMISSIONED OFFICER/U/32//CAPTAIN 2ND DRAGOONS/ABD//N B/
J/GEORGE CALVERT/CLARKE/COMMISSIONED OFFICER/U/35//CAPTAIN 2ND DRAGOONS/MDX/LONDON/
J/SIR GEORGE/HAMPSON/COMMISSIONED OFFICER/U/26//CAPTAIN 2ND DRAGOONS/MDX/

The file description says:

Quote
:
Then follow a series of person records, starting 'J'.

Fields are:-
        Christian Names(s)
        Surname
        Relation to head of household
        Marital status
Age if male     } One of these fields
Age if female   } should be blank!

        Occupation
Place of Birth (this may take more than one field, if for example both
a town and a county were given.  Order is that given
in the enumeration book.  The County is coded to
BS 6879:1987 - almost the same as Chapman County
                        Coding)
:

As the second field is blank, this looks like Mary is a man !

"Mary" is one of 12 persons, all commissioned officers, all - according to the above description - male !

Hi Ben,
Sorry to disappoint you, but I've just checked the original return and it doesn't say 'Mary', it is quite clearly 'Henry'. All the other details from the transcription are correct.
For your info, there is another 'Lyon' family in the barracks, details as follows,
ref HO107 1624a folio 164
parish St Mary Northgate, Barracks
Alexander Lyon husband mar age 41 groom (soldier) born Glasgow
Isabella Lyon wife mar age 35 born Donegal Lifford
Margaret do dau age 10 born Warwick Birmingham
Catherine do dau age 8 born Norfolk Norwich
John do son age 2 born Galway Gort
Alexander do son age 6 months born Canterbury
As this family was listed amongst the servants for Henry Griffiths, major, 2nd Dragoon guards, they could well have been part of his personal staff.
xx Carol.
