Hi Doorwoman, was William possibly a  Dadswell b c 1899, Hastings, if so the 1901 census RG13/898/70/8 shows a William Dadswell aged 2 Great Grandson to James and Harriett Wood, also in household is a Henry Sellings aged 2 shown as Grandson.

there is another connection with the Sellings family

think I have found a Snelling connection to James and Harriet Wood

PineHurst Cottage Ritherfield Sussex
James Sellings Head M 65 ag lab Mayfield Sussex
HARRIETT wife 40 Rotherfield
Harriet Heasman daughter I 20 Domestic servant out of place
Abel Heasman son 15 ag lab
Risehannah Sellings daughter 7
Ann Sellings daughter 9
John Sellings son 5
Alice Sellings daughter 2
children all b Rotherfield

James died

Then

Marriage reg
Dec qtr 1889
Uckfield

on same page
Harriet Heasman
James Wood

(Mark Heasman also on same page -think he married Sarah A Baldock)

So Grandson Henry Sellings would be from Harriet's side of the family -not the Wood side

So now to discover which "side" William Henry belongs to???

I seem to have taken over this query. My apologies, and I hope nobody is forgetting Charlie Dadswell as they hunt around for my Daniel and William Henry!

Hi

Re: William Henry - I honestly think the only way to solve this is to buy a copy of that 1899 birth cert to establish his parentage

Until you do that - you won't be able to "slot" him into the various mix of families

Do Canadian marriage or death certs show any parent details?

Back to Charles

Have you already eliminated the free 1911 index entry for Charles Dadswell b 1879 living in Holborn London.  Birthplace matches to Sussex

If it's not him - did Charles possibly emigrate to Canada?  Have you checked the Canadian 1901 census for him?

CaroleW, yes, most Canadian BMDs list parents. Of course, everyone I look for is covered by those left over after most is used up. On William Henry Dadswell Beeney's marriage record, he lists his adoptive parents, John Beeney and Sarah (Crouch) Beeney.

Dadswell family mystery SOLVED
« Reply #15 on: Tuesday 20 December 11 11:33 GMT (UK) »
Thanks to some very giving and thoughtful folks here, my family mystery concerning the Dadswells has been (mostly) solved.

When my gggmother came to Canada with her husband, they brought with them a boy age 14 named William Henry. He used the Beeney surname in Canada but we always knew he was not related.

I had found his marriage doc and learned he had given his second middle name as Dadswell and listed his parents as Sarah and John Beeney.

I later found that in 1901 a Daniel Dadswell was residing with the Beeneys as a boarder. John Beeney worked for the railroad. When another poster here mentioned a Dadswell with a connection to the railroad, it grabbed my attention and I began posting.

What I've been given from the censuses and a Dadswell one-surname database shows that Daniel's daughter Ellen gave birth to a child out of wedlock - William Henry. On the 1911 census, he is in the Beeney household and listed as adopted.

While we still don't know why the Beeneys adopted him, we at least now know some of his background and history, how he came to their attention, and can appreciate the similarities between Ellen's circumstance and Sarah's - both gave birth to children out of wedlock in the Union Workhouse.

Many thanks to everyone who helped solve this mystery!

Hi again, yes we have forgotten Charles Dadswell, I believe it is highly probable that this is his marriage:-

Charles Dadswell to Mary WOOD December 1908 Hunslet 9b 467

Wonder if Mary is a relation to the previous Woods mentioned?

I can't help with the search for Charles Dadswell I'm afraid, but just to note that the Abel Heasman mentioned in the 1871 census (in Suzard's post below) at Pinehurst Cottage is my great great grandfather.  Harriet was his sister, but I don't have any information on the rest of the household.
